The saying “ Pride goeth before a fall," should be really ‘‘Pride goeth before destruction.” 'Make assurance doubly sure" should be "double sure." "Escape by the skin of my teeth.” should, be “with the skin"; and “The sweat v>f thy brow” should be “sweat of thy face.” When an object is covered by water the oxygen of the air cannot reach it. Hence fire is extinguished by water. Moreover, water has a great capacity, for heat. It takes so much heat to itself and so quickly lowers the hotness, or temperature, of the burning thing, «« that it can no longer burn.
