THE ORIGIN OF FOOTBALL

IT MAY BE SEASONABLE at this time to give a theory as to the origin of the game of football, as many persons—even ardent enthusiasts —are unaware of its commencement. So here is one. About two thousand years ago there dwelt in Afredonia a savage tribe known as the Bhoys. They were invincible in war, and invariably beheaded all captains. Their executioner had the knack of lopping off heads so that they flew many yards through the air, and the warriors stood around in a ring and kicked at the flying heads. This was the origin of the flying kick. One day two warriors kicked at the same head, and one fell with his leg broken. After that football became firmly established. The war-cry of the tribe was “ Gofertheman,” and when anything irritated a warrior he exclaimed “ Terhell.” All that, of course, happened two thousand years ago. Nevertheless, similar incidents occur during the game nowadays which serve to remind us how the Bhoys acted in the long ago.
