OBITUARY.
ROBERT BRAKE. The death of Mr Robert Brake, at the age of seventy-seven, removes one of the earliest residents of Riccarton. In 1883 he established the business which was long well known as Brake’s Store, at Church Corner, Upper Riccarton. The building was destroyed by fire only a short time ago. In public life the late Mr Brake was a very conscientious and energetic worker, though never one who courted public notice. A genial man, every movement in the interests of the district had his support. For some years he was people’s warden on the vestry of St Peter’s Anglican Church, and also a Justice of the Peace. The late Mr Brake left a large family. One son, Mr J. L. Brake, had a store at Arthur’s Pass, and during the coaching days ran the refreshment rooms at the point where the present railway terminates. Another son, Mr Henry Brake, is a builder at Riccarton. FRANK SAMUEL MADDISON. The death has occurred of Mr Frank Samuel Maddison, of 12, Rugby Street, at the age of 63. For many years Mr Maddison was farming in the Rolleston district. He retired some years ago and came to live in Christchurch. He was well known as a member of the St Albans Bowling Club, where he was a prominent skip.
