STRAINED RELATIONS IN WAIKATO DIOCESE.
BISHOP REQUESTS DEAN TO FORWARD RESIGNATION.
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 29. Since the sitting of the Waikato Diocesan Synod last July, strong differences have existed between Bishop C. A. Cherrington and Dean G. R. Barnett, of Hamilton. The strained relations have become accentuated recently, and a fortnight ago the Bishop wrote to the Dean requesting him to forward his resignation within seven days. The Dean replied declining to accede to the Bishop’s request, and. as a result, a commission has been appointed to inquire into the question of the Dean’s fitness to retain office as dean of the cathedral and vicar of St Peter’s Parish.
The commission, after hearing evidence, will report to the Bishop, who will act in accordance with the commission’s recommendation.
