MOTOR-CAR WENT THROUGH BRIDGE INTO DEEP WATER.
SOUTHLAND FAMILY HAS A MIRACULOUS ESCAPE.
Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, January 29. A miraculous escape from serious injury in a motor accident, when their car crashed over the bridge crossing the Makarewa River, at Wallacetown, was the experience of Mr F. Simpson, superintendent of the Invercargill Fire Brigade, and his family, when returning to Invercargill from Colac Bay on Monday evening. After rounding the curve on to the bridge, the car failed to straighten up in time, and, instead of continuing straight across, lurched to one side and went through the wooden balustrade into the river. The car appears to have turned a complete somersault as it fell. It landed in fairly deep water, and the party was in danger of drowning.
Mr Simpson, with some difficulty, managed to get his head clear and struggle free, and the rest of his family were assisted to safety. Mr Simpson sustained a nasty wound near his eye, but was otherwise not seriously injured, while the members of his family suffered principally from shock.
