DOUBLE TRAGEDY NARROWLY AVERTED AT NEW BRIGHTON.

TWO RESCUED FROM DANGEROUS HOLE.

A double tragedy in the surf at New Brighton was narrowly averted yesterday- afternoon, when a young man named Arnold Woodham, of Mathieson’s Road, and a young woman, Ina Campbell, St Albans, got into serious difficulties in the same hole from which three persons were rescued on the previous Sunday. The pair of bathers entered the water opposite the end of Lonsdale Street, but owing to the strong southerly set down the coast they soon got into the vicinity of the deep scouring which has already caused so much trouble. The girl.suddenly got out of her depth and was being assisted by the youth when those on the beach realised that they were in distress, and help was at once available. They were soon brought Bafely ashore, but landed in a state of complete exhaustion. The rescue was effected by a large number of members of the Surf Club who were present on the beach in force attending the life-saving competitions.
