CROSS-WORD PUZZLE-1151.
The numbered squares are the starting points for words extending across or down, or both. One letter to a square. Words end at first black square encountered or border of puzzle. Pick out a word that fits a given definition and space. This gives you a clue to other words that cross it, and they in turn to still other words. The solution will appear in next issue.
CLUES.

I—The flat-dweller's garden. 9—A desert wind from Arabia. 10— A collecting hobby. 11— Good strong ale (and like it, archaic). 12— Heard in the law courts (first in a postscript). 13— Irish town. 17—A poem from Rhodesia. 19— Kind of dog whose name is a hint in itself. 20 — Baggage is often lost herein. 21— We know this corporation as a sound one. 23 —A town of Indian Mutiny fame. 27 — Supreme. 28— Plays an important part in the propagation of plants. 29 — This might betray the country cousin in the drawing-room (an adopted word). 30— Purpose. 31— Set these high and your achievements will be worthy of you.
DOWN. 2 Most smokers learn to do this. 3 Ruler of the U.S.A. 4 Two prepositions make a third. 5 “Old, I beg” (anag.). 6 Several daily papers are of this description. 7 The fullest sort of license (or a poor sort of tennis ball). 8— It is not customary to accuse the violet of this. 14— A fit subject. 15 — Found on a railway line (or on the dinner table). 16— Fish. 17— This has a round significance. IS —This saves further enumeration. 22—Loud. - 24 Bird of prey. 25 — Character from Ivanhoe. 26 This is half-way to cruel.
