AUCKLAND, December 21. “ He was pretty cheeky all right, laying odds right in front of the totalisator house on the racecourse,” was the comment on Chief-Detective Hammond at the Police Court to-day. referring to Charles Herbert Geard, who pleaded guilty to a charge i of having laid totalisator odds. Counsel said Geard had never been in any trouble before. He had met with an accident at work and was at present on reduced wages. “ That is quite so,” said Chief-Detec-' tive Hammond. “He was only a silver bettor.” Geard was fined £5 and allowed fourteen days to pay.
