POOR RESPONSE TO HARDY MEMORIAL APPEAL IN BRITAIN.
(Special to the “ Star.”) LONDON. October 3. The Mayor of Dorchester, Mr W. F. Hodges, announced yesterday that the proposed memorial to the late Mr Thomas Hardy would take the form of an obelisk to be erected at Rainbarrow, on Egdon Heath —the name given by the novelist to the stretch of moorland between Dorchester and Poole. The response to the appeal had not been so good as was expected, the total being a little more than £IOOO. The proposed library of Hardy works would not now be practicable.
