LAWN TENNIS.

LEADING COMPETITORS PRACTISING HARD FOR N.Z. TOURNEY. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND. December 22. Misses Speirs, Wake, Andrew and Marjorie . Gibson (Timaru) reached Auckland on Thursday night, and practised on the Stanley Street courts yesterday in doubles and singles, Miss Wake going particularly well. The courts are true enough, but not nearly- as good as those at United. Stand accommodation has been provided for several hundred people, and part of it has been roofed in, giving a prospect of much larger attendances than usual.

Angas has felt the heat of the Auckland pavements trying on his feet, but he is practising solidly in singles against Bartleet and Laurenson. The weather, so far, has been decidedly mild, and if it continues so the Canterbury ladies have a good chance of winning the singles and doubles. Bartleet is the Auckland pick for the singles, and, curiously enough, Glanviile is held in greater respect here than in Christchurch, possibly on account of his win against Higgs, of the English team. SUBURBAN MATCHES. The Suburban, inter-club competition was continued at Wilding: Park this afternoon. The weather was fine, although a strong- easterly wind proved troublesome to the players.
