Papanui Paragraphs

By Special Correspondent of the ” Star.**

WAIMAIRI SCHOOL “BREAK-UP.” The reason for the success of the Waimairi School “break-up’.’ is doubtless the fame of the Waimairi School Concert Party, well-known to every radio listener. The children are trained by Mr C. E. Evans, one of the masters, and their items are exceedingly popular. A Papanui lady on a visit to Taumarunui in the King Country, North Island, met Mr J. Lawrence, who used to reside in Church Street, and Mr Lawrence kept in touch with 3ZC’s programmes in order to listen in to the Waimairi children. He said it was the best music heard over the air. At Wednesday’s concert, items were given by each standard and arranged by the teachers. The infants gave musical games and nursing rhymes; Standard 1 and 2 gave a folk-dance and “In Our Canoe”; Standard 3 gave “Basque Lullaby,” and “Hush Thee, My Baby,” and a dialogue “Tom Sawyer”; Standard 4 gave a flute selection “The Polar Bears”; Standard 4,5, and 6 then gave a number of part songs and choruses. A banjo item was given by Miss D. Elodgson and Mr D. Evans; euphonium solos by Mr V. Sharp; euphonium and cornet duet by Misses Martin and Sharp: and a pretty dance scene was staged by Miss Marion Grose’s pupils. An interesting feature of the prizegiving was the presentation made to Betty Smith and Roy Stacey, who had won scholarships. Miss M. Duncan w r as the first mistress of the Waimairi School when the building had but two rooms, and but a few pupils. Miss Duncan still retains an interest in the school and came all the way from Sumner to present the prizes. Mr H. Tillman, on behalf of the committee and Mr C. Wilkins on behalf of the staff, thanked Miss Duncan for her great interest, and Miss Jean Neilson, a former pupil of Miss Duncan’s, presented her with a bouquet amid enthusiastic applause. PERSONAL. Mrs Rudkins, of Belfast, and Miss Miller, of St John Street, left on Thursday night to spend Christmas in Gisborne. Miss M. M’Murchie is spending Christmas with her grandmother, Mrs Miller, St John Street. BEAUTIFYING PAPANUI. Recently mention was made of Papanui citizens who cared for plots away from their homes. A reserve was given to the council at the corner of St James Avenue and Windemere Street. Through the gifts of asters by Mr Wintringham and geraniums by Mr J. Sturroch, the plot has been planted out. Mr Sturroch did the planting and the small reserve with its rock edging looks very well. CRICKET. Papanui A and B teams met at St James Park on Saturday, and the A team were victorious. The A team made 89, with Mulcock 40 and Wright 21, the top scores. The B team replied with 36 and 16. In the first innings Mulcock

took 5 wickets for 19. In the second he took 7 wickets for 6 and Menzies 2 for 2. BOWLING. Barnes (s) and Quigley still hold the Matson’s badges in spite of repeated challenges. Shaw and Pool (s) put up a great fight, and were beaten by 1 on the last head. In the next attempt they did not do so well. Morrison and his team did not hold the Junior Shield for long. Barrington journeyed to Papanui and won by a narrow margin. It is understood that with the slight alteration in the team Papanui will challenge the winners. NOTES. A correction is made regarding the Waimairi prize list:—ln Standard IV. the sewing special prize was won by Jean Nelson and was given by Mrs Breen. The first portion of the children’s playground equipment for St James Park, a set of three boat swings, will be erected early in the new year. All the material is now ready, and permission for the erection to proceed has been granted. * The Papanui Silver Band will be playing Christmas carols in Papanui on Christmas Eve. The band is now firmly on its feet, and is a very fine musical combination. Mr G. A. C. Tapper advertises elsewhere that the band is now open to engagements. A.O.F. There was a large attendance of members present at the last meeting of the year, held on Monday night. Chief Ranger Brother J. Cains presided. Five members were reported to be on the sick funds and sick pay was dispensed accordingly. Accounts to the amount of £sl 5s and one maternity claim were passed for payment. Seasonal greetings were received from the District Officers and Brother T. Granger (Dunedin). After the meeting was closed a euchre tournament was held, the winners being Brother C. Smith and Brother C. G. Claridge (equal) 1, Brother F. Foote 3 and Brother Langdon 4. Supper was served by the lady members of the Court. ANNIVERSARY DANCE. On Monday evening the Hare wood Hall was taxed to its utmost capacity when an anniversary dance was held. The lucky spot one-step was awarded to Miss R. Grammer and Mr C. Durey, and the Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss R. Hill and Mr D. Hall. Excellent music was supplied by Bettel’s orchestra. Extras were contributed by Mr E. Dixon and others. Mr C.
