“UNCLE TOM’S CABIN” TO BE SHOWN IN CITY VERY SOON.
Interest is already aroused by the forthcoming Christchurch .season of the Universal picture, “ Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” This film version is a vast improvement on previous productions, completely eschewing anything savouring of burlesque, producing the story on a scale worthy of the origin, and having a cast of most accomplished players. The picture is said to have cost the company over two million dollars to make, and when one has seen the imposing sets, the great crowds, and when one notes the distinguished names in the cast, there will be little wonder at the sum. The Topsy and Eva of this “ Uncle Tom’s Cabin ” are the most irresistible of any. Uncle Tom is a dignified and wistful person. Simon Legree positively terrifying, and all the others, from Miss Ophelia down, are perfect examples of a lost type. The famous ice scene, with Eliza fleeing with her baby, and the bloodhounds after her, has lost none of its pristine powers to thrill.
