HEATHCOTE COUNTY COUNCIL ADOPTS PROGRESSIVE POLICY.

IMPORTANT LOAN WORKS PUT IN HAND. As a result of a progressive policy adopted by the Heathcote County Council, and supported by the great majority of the ratepayers, a number of important loan works are being put in hand in various ridings of the county. In the Cashmere riding, two loans, each of £BOOO, are being raised for the carrying-out of works that received aimost unanimous approval when the proposals were submitted to the ratepayers in October last. One of the loans is for reconstructing, extending and reorganising the electric system, and the other is for waterworks extension. Tenders have alrealy closed for the supply of electric motors and pumps, sinking of wells and construction of pipe-line, and on January 16 next tenders will close for the construction of a new reservoir. When these works are completed. Cashmere, which is already one of the most popular residential districts in the metropolitan area, will be a still more attractive place in which to reside. On the same day that the Cashmere loan polls were held, a proposal to raise a loan of £BSOO for reconstructing, extending, and reorganising the electric system in the Avon and Bromley ridings, was also carried by a large majority of the ratepayers who voted. This work is now* about to be put in hand, tenders having closed for the supply of the necessary materials. In addition to these works a loan for the provision of a water supply system in Avoca Valley, in the Valley riding, has been authorised by special order. The pipes are due to be landed at Lyttelton to-day, and the work of laying them will be put in hand immediately after the holidays. On Wednesday last a waterworks extension loan of £2200 was authorised by the ratepayers of the Mount Pleasant riding, and the pipes have already been delivered on the ground. The tenders for the sinking of the wells and the supply of pumps, will close on January 10. A start with the work of laying the pipe-line will be made as soon as the Avoca Valley work is finished. The County Council is raising all the loans at 5i per cent interest, and about £3OOO worth of debentures has already been disposed of.
