“HIT THE DECK” NOW BEING STAGED AT THEATRE ROYAL.
“ Hit the Deck ” was repeated at the Theatre Royal last night by the J. C. Williamson Company, headed by Miss Annie Croft. The music is bright and tuneful, and the whole production is full of that rollicking humour characteristic of the British jack tar. There are a number of good choruses that go 'with a fine swing, and several novelty dances of exceptional merit
are introduced. The scenery is very fine. There is not much of a plot in “ Hit the Deck.” In fact, there is hardly any plot at all. However, this makes no difference to the success of the piece. Miss Annie Croft again scored a disinct success, her bright and winsome personality making her admirably suited to the part with which she was entrusted. Mr Reginald Sharland also did some fine acting in the leading male role. Miss May Beatty scored one of the triumphs of her career. Her comedy work was particularly fine, but it was in the singing of the famous “ Hallelujah ” song that she was at her best. Much of the comedy work fell to Mr Gus Bluett, who again scored a great success as a fun maker. He was well assisted by Mr Leo Franklyn and Mr Leslie Donaghey. Miss Billie Lockwood made the most of a small part. The other roles were well filled, and valuable assistance was given to the principals by the ballet and the male chorus. “Hit the Deck” will be repeated this evening and there will be a matinee performance to-day.
