Racing and Trotting

NOTES BY

“ARGUS.”

RACING NOTES. W. G. Hobbs left for the south today with the two-year-old Dutch Money, who is expected to race prominently at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting. Honeycomb will not make the trip, as he has developed leg troubles. * s|r * * R. Longley went south to-day with Proud Knight, who should race well Among the hacks at the Dunedin meeting. He may be a competitor, also, at Waikouaiti on New Year’s Day. * * * * Miss L. Doyle sent Star Raid south to-day for the Dunedin meeting. He is in the best of order for holiday engagemeqts. * * * * Although Battle Colours has been allowed to forfeit his first day’s engagement at the Dunedin meeting, he may be seen out on the second day. It is probable that D. Campbell will take him south on Sunday night’s train. * * '* * F. T. Buchanan expects to leave by Sunday night’s train with Gay Sonnet, who is engaged at the Dunedin and other southern holiday fixtures. She is at the top of her form at present. * * * a A large team of Riccarton horses will compete at the West Coast meetings. Most of them will go by train leaving in the early hours of Monday morning. The trainers with horses booked for the trip include Miss L. Doyle, Moratorium and Sea Raid: H. Nurse, Greyfisb, Lancer, After Ten and Oriflamb; J. B. Pearson. Malmsey and Caterpillar; J. W. Jennings, Scrambler, John Dix, Fair Go and Killadie; A. E. Wormald, Pangolin and Spode; R. Adamson, Solfello and Skyquest; R. Longley, Heisler; C. Preston, No Response: R. W. King, Singlespear; and S. Adamson, Lord Middleton. * *• a * Although Front Rank is booked to compete in the Waikouaiti Cup on New Year's Day, it is doubtful if Pahautanui will accompany her to the meeting. * * a • R. Ellis expects to race Buoyant and Arrowmin at the Waikouaiti meeting on New Year’s Day. a a a a A four-year-old mare by Greyspear from Cuirass, owned by Mr H. Ensor, is the latest addition to R. Longley’s team. * *• * a Gaybird will be a competitor in the chief event at the Waiau meeting on New Year’s Day. This picnic gathering is very popular over a wide sporting district in North Canterbury, where Miss E. D. Robinson, the owner of Gaybird, resides. * a •* * Nothing definite can be ascertained at present, but there are rumours to the effect that Goshawk may not be a runner in the Auckland Cup. Not a great deal has been heard regarding his latest doings, and it is believed that there is some foundation for the reports in circulation. a a -a a The fact of Oratrix holding a position with the favourite division in connection with the Auckland Cup serves to revive recollections, writes “Phaeton.” A research through the history of the Auckland Cup reveals that only on five occasions in the fifty-four races that have eventuated to date has a mare triumphed. Mares have, however, many times been included in the placed division. In the first contest, •which eventuated in 1874, Toi and Yatterina followed Templeton home, and in the succeeding year Toi came home third to Kingfisher and Guy Fawkes. In 1877 Elsa and Venus Transit were the closest attendants to Ariel, and in 1880 Maid of Honour acted as runner-up to Foul Play, while in the year following Albany’s bay daughter Hilda filled a like role to King Quail. In the race of 1884 Woodnymph came home third to The Poet and Normanby, and then in 1885 (made memorable by Nelson’s sudden burst of brilliant form) Waitiri and Victoria attended the winner home. In the succeeding year Waitiri again followed Nelson home, and third place on that occasion was filled by Clogs. In 1888 Hilda, the black daughter of Musket, came home second to Lochiel: in the following year Lady Norah. and Hilda finished second and third respectively to Leopold; while in 1890 Hilda and Cissy figured as the immediate attendants of Crackshot. Coalscuttle finished second to Pinfire in the race of 1891, in the following vear Merganser came home third behind St Hippo and Brigand, and in 1893 Ida and Rosefeldt filled second and third places respectively behind Pegasus. In 1894 Lottie led home the field, and in the following year Anita claimed the attention of the judge, while Dreamland finished third. Five 3 r ears then elapsed before one of the weaker sex succeeded in gaining a situation, Ideal being the one to follow home Blue jacket in the Cup of 1900; and then there was a gap of a like period before Armistice gained a situation, the Mahaki mare following home Putty and Mahutonga in the rare of 1905. The mares were completely out of it in the interval until 1911, when Soultoria managed to get up into third place behind Santa Rosa and Domino. In the year following La Reina ran Bobrikoff to a neck. In 1914 Warstep scored a victory, and in 1917 Red Rib bon filled the role of runner-up to Fiery Cross. In 1918 Mascot disposed of the opposition and Karo had a like record in the race of 1919. The mares have been right out of it in the intervening contests, so that if Oratrix scores on Boxing Day the victory for one of the weaker sex will be fully due.

Rotor has been allowed to drop out of his first day’s engagements at the Dunedin meeting, but he should race well later in the trip. He reads like a good prospect for the Wyndham Cup. * * * * Reports from Awapuni state that the Riccarton horses have arrived in good order for their engagements at the Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting. Kinross is to compete in the Queen s Plate and the Derby at the Auckland meeting. A few days ago at Hastings, with trainer Gray in the saddle, he, in company with High Court, was sent a mile on the course proper the reverse way around, running the distance in lmin 46sec. Over the first part of the journey the Derby candidate, owing to the reverse way, appeared just a little perplexed, but soon settled down to run and finish an impressive gallop. This high-strung son of Psychology and Valley Rose, being light fleshed as well as light of colour, may not impress the northern scribes and critics, but he may prove useful if not up to Derby standard. He may pick up a minor stake. TROTTING NOTES. In connection with the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Boxing Day-, special trains will leave Christchurch at 9.30 a.m. and 9.40 a.m. The return trains will leave the racecourse siding at 5.10 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. * * * # Mr 11. F. Nicoll has First Wrack and Sabatini engaged in the Mitcham Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Boxing Day. Sabatini is a four-year-old by Author Dillon from Pearl Child, while First Wrack is a year younger, by Wrack from the same mare. The progeny of Pearl Child all go at the pacing gait with the exception of this gelding and filly. * w * -Jfi Wrackler and Roi l’Or are the early fancies for the Ashburton Cup on Boxing Day. sfc sfc * * Mangoutu trotted several useful races some little time ago, and in addition went away from the barrier in good style. She has, however, drifted back somewhat, and does not now commence right, nor keep to her gait. When Mangoutu is doing her work properly she has a lot of speed and also possesses stamina. * * * * Judged by his racing at the recent New Brighton meeting, it looks as though Ouimet is on the down grade. The Royal Rothschild pacer has been in work a short time under the care of G. F. Robinson, who thoroughly understands the ways of the horse. Ouimet failed to keep to his gait, nor did he show much speed when he was pacing. * * * * It is reported from Auckland that Mrs C. M'Gregor has purchased The Abbey from Mr M. Moodabe and he will in future be trained by W. Clifton. The Abbey is expected to make an early return to his lady owner. * *■ * * The Australian-bred pacer, Torpedo Huon, who has been purchased by Mrs I. E. Sweetapple, arrived in Auckland from Sydney this week, and has gone into J. Shaw’s stable. Torpedo Huon is a six-year-old horse and has a winning record of 3.24 for a mile and a half. * * * * Sunshower is a genuine pacer over any distance, and she should get among the winners at the holiday meetings. She is freely engaged on the southern circuit. •** * * A likely sort seen out at the Cromwell meeting was Golden Thread, a five-year-old gelding by St Swithin from Dot Robbins. He did not look at his best. * * * * Lily Harold showed pace at the Cromwell meeting, but she did not carry it far enough to make her a winner. She should win races on the country circuit. * * * * If Kinney Dillon is reserved for the Farewell Handicap at the Gore meeting she should be one of the leaders all the way. * * * * Jolly Maid is expected to develop into a winner during the holiday meetings. * * * * Nelson M’Elwyn has race-winning speed, but it is a long time since he showed it. He will be raced on the southern circuit during the holidays, and a return to the tracks .he used to race on may also mean a return to form. * * * * The southern pacer Lucky Harold retains his form wonderfully well, and he has been striding out nicely in his work. There are, however, some smart ones in front of him in the handicaps now, and he will need to do better than he has ever done to win. * *• * * Among those nominated for the two events at Waikouaiti is Kilmarnock, who has not been raced for several seasons. The grey pacer looks well, but he will need something more than looks to land another win. >!«*** From a 2.19 mark in the Telegraph Handicap at the Gore meeting Wilma Dillon should race prominently. He is one of the smartest pacers in Southland at the present time, and goes particularly well in saddle. * * .* * The Dunedin-owned Erin’s Chance paced two good races at Oamaru, and his performance on the second day was particularly good, as he was badly boxed on the rails for most of the journey. The Erin’s King gelding is trained by W. Gallagher, a brother to P. Gallagher, who is well known in light harness circles.

Twelve months ago the most select team of pacers possessed by any one owner in the north were those belonging to the Aucklander, Mr M. Moodabe. At that time he had Jewel Pointer, Western King and Amaris, and later he added to these by purchasing The Abbey. At meeting after meeting he won substantial money, very often heading the list of wanning owners, and as his horses were always run on their merits none was more popular than those carrying his colours. Mr Moodabe was an asset to the ranks of Auckland owners, as he was one of the few—they could be counted on the fingers of one hand—who would give a good price for a horse. Now Mr Moodabe finds that his business interests are so extensive that he cannot spare the time to get the enjoyment out of trotting that he would wish, and a few weeks back he decided to dispose of his team. At the New Zealand Cup meeting last month he sold Western King and Amaris, and this week The Abbey was purchased by Mrs M’Gregor. This leaves Mr Moodabe with only his favourite, Jewel Pointer, and he may be sold very soon. RICCARTON NOTES. Saturday. The weather was dull and cold for training operations at Riccarton this morning. The inside of the trial grass track was in good order, but with so many horses away, proceedings were not very exciting. Prickles and Swoopalong were together all through a mile gallop, run in 1.47. Spode and Jangolin were associated in a half-mile sprint, which they got through in 50 2-ssec. Pangolin was going a trifle the better of the pair, but Spode hit out freely, her effort being an improvement on any of her recent track gallops. Sudden Storm and Rock Drill sprinted half a mile along the back in 51sec. Semper Paratus and Full Feather were responsible for a smart half-mile sprint along the back, registering 49 sec. Childsplay was responsible for a similar performance by herself. Discordia beat Weather Raid and Sea Raid over five furlongs in lmin 6 2-ssec, after taking 14 2-ssec for the first furlong. Caterpillar beat After Tea and Shipshape in a half-mile spin in 52sec, and going fast for the first three furlongs. Pahautanui went well over five furlongs, beating Mentone and Kilcavan in lmin 4sec. Battle Colours and Front Rank were companions in a good mile gallop, which they ran in lmin 43 2-ssec. Battle Colours went off in front and led most of the way, but Front Rank was travelling. on well at the end and finished practically on terms with her mate. Battle Colours went very pleasingly all through his work. Gaybird beat Star Raid over seven furlongs in lmin 32 l-ssec. Gaybird is booked to race in the Waiau Cup. Malmsey reeled off a mile by herself in lmin 43 2-ssec. It was a good performance, and she was going particularly well all the way. Moratorium occupied lmin 22sec in an easy run over six furlongs. His feet have been causing trouble lately, but he seems all right now and he will accompany Weather Raid to the West Coast meeting. HANDICAPS. CANTERBURY PARK TROTTING CLUB.
