RACING AT HOME.

To the Editor. Dear Sir, —In answer to Mr G. T. Robinson’s statements that Mr Rattray could have been more severe, well, I can also be more severe. Where, for instance, is there class distinction? Certainly not in New Zealand. What harm is there in certain classes having boxes or reserved seats as long as they pay for them? Even at Riccarton, if one pay's the higher fee, one can sit in comfort sheltered from the rain, while the majority have to be satisfied with one pavilion only to keep them dry. So much for class distinction. How came Mr G. T. Robinson to be standing just in front of King George and other members of the Royal Family? Apparently the racing authorities at Home accord special treatment to New Zealanders and Australians, even if they charge them more than in New Zealand. As a matter of fact, I was surprised at the high prices that were being charged here to the general racegoer. Mr G. T. Robinson is also making another big mistake when he says that up goes the cost at Home on cup day's. I defy Mr Robinson to disprove this statement that all railway fares are lowered to excursion rates and are not increased, as they are here in New Zealand. In reference to “ ragtime rules,” the crowds cross the course here. If they do it more so in England, perhaps that is due to people there having more freedom. Mr G. T. Robinson may have a little knowledge of racing conditions, but I think he would do much better as a play writer. I really did appreciate his “ sketch ” effort.—l am, etc., HOME AND COLONIAL.
