DEFINITE POLICY FOR RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT.

GOVERNMENT WILL ABSORB MANY MEN. (.Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, December 20. A brief statement concerning the Government’s policy with respect to unemployment was made by the Minister of Public Works in reply to an inquiry. The Minister explained that provision was being made to meet all urgent cases as they arose, and that it was proposed to enter into a definite policy as soon as possible after the holiday period. The speeding-up of railway works as announced will absorb quite a large number of men seeking employment. The Minister added that provision was being made for this at once. The Minister hinted that later on consideration would probably be given to the possibility of placing men in groups on the breaking-in of some of the poorer lands of New Zealand. It was a subject in which he had always been interested, and he intended, when opportunity offered, again to go fully into it. '
