RETIRING AFTER 45 YEARS’ SERVICE.

TRIBUTES PAID TO MR ROBERT HAMILTON. There was a numerous attendance of present and past employees of the firm of Messrs J. and W. Jamieson, Ltd., at the residence of Mr W. G. Jamieson. Deans Avenue, last night, the occasion being a presentation to Mr Rober t Hamilton, who is severing his connection with the firm after forty-five years’ service, most of the time as manager. Mr W. G. Jamieson, in making the presentation, which consisted of a portrait. in oils, of Mr Hamilton, the work of Mr A. F. Xicoll, .said that Mr Hamilton came to the Dominion fifty years ago and had done some “roughing it” in the backblocks before joining thr firm. He knew of no man in New Zea land who had been a better example to young men. In honouring him, they were honouring a man worthy of honour— A man who always had played the game and whose life and work were an inspiration. Remarks of a eulogistic character were made by Messrs A. K Ragg. II r famieson, W- M ebb. I >\l\est(*r. H 'Worrall. W G. Oee• H. K Rus-t-rMge. J. Gibson. VI Kath'e F Tczer. r Harrop, II F. Gook and < fc Reaby. Mr Hamilton's health was enthusiastically honoured. Mr Jamieson then asked Mr Ilamil tan to accept the portrait (which was „ n view) from those with whom he had been so long associated.

Mr Hamilton, in acknowledging the gift, said that it was a delight to see so many of his old mates present, lie had had many large contracts in every part of the Dominion, and it was to those men who had proved apt pupils that some of the credit was due. In Mr Jamieson he always had had a willing counsellor, and he felt sure that he had had Mr Jamieson's confidence right from the start. He was sure that he could not have got in with a better firm. He expressed himself as vefry pleased with the portrait. During the evening there were several musical items, and at a fitting interval supper was provided.
