FROM THE “STAR” SIXTY YEARS AGO.

ADVERTISEMENTS AND NEWS OF DEC. 22, IS6B.

Christmas Fare.—The annual display of Christmas fare will be made by the city tradesmen to-morrow evening. From what information we have gathered, the event is likely to be equal in every respect, if not superior, to those in former years. Freemasonry.—Yesterday the important ceremony of installing a Provincial Grand Master was celebrated by the Freemasons, and attracted a large attendance of brethren from all Lodges in the province. A large number of spectators attended that portion of it open to public view, and altogether a very considerable interest was taken in the proceedings. Brother Donald, the master elect, has been prominently connected with the Order since its first establishment in the province, and has ever possessed the regard of his fellow craftsmen. He has held the position of deputy from the time the office became vacant some three years ago—and the permanency being conferred upon him has given general satisfaction, the brethren having been unanimous in recommending him for the appointment. After the installation the Grand Master appointed the following brethren to fill the respective offices attached to their names:—C. W. Bishop, Deputy Provincial Grand Master; C. B. Grierson, Senior Warden; 11. Thomson, Junior Warden; Rev W. J. G. Bluett, Chaplain: C. W. Bishop, Registrar; A. F. N. Blakiston, Secretary and Treasurer; —. Mansfield, Senior Deacon; J. T. The unfortunate deceased has left a wife and family to deplore his untimely end. The river rose so rapidly that only twenty minutes elapsed from the time they started till their return; and the companions of the deceased had to remain on a spit till they were rescued from their perilous situation by Mr M’Lean, who forded them across in safety.
