At the annual breaking-up ceremony on Wednesday afternoon there was a large attendance of parents in the infant school, when Father Christmas dis tributed presents from two well-lader Christmas trees. At the conclusion oi the ceremony in the infant school. th< Standard VI. proficiency and swimming certificates and the dux and sports medals were presented by Mr J. S. Bar-

nett (chairman) and Mesdames Hamlin and Thrower, members of the School Committee. The winners of the medals are as follows: Dux medals—Boy: John Robertson: girl: Jean Taylor. Sports championships—Boy: Harold Wright: girl: Una Gabbott. Scorer of highest number of points in rounders' team: Jewell Hobbs. During* the afternoon Miss E. Mnthleson, who is leaving the service to be married, was presented by the staff with a pyrex dish in a silver stand. Tn making the presentation the headmaster (Mr D. M. Shirlay) expressed his appreciation of the good work Miss Mathieson had done during the year and conveved to her the best wishes of the staff for a bright and happy future. Miss Bowden (infant mistress) and Miss Craig (senior mistress). also spoke in appreciative terms of Mias Mathieson’s work, and Mrs Hamlin spoke on behalf of the School Committee Miss Mathieson suitably replied.

RICHMOND SCHOOL. The annual breaklng-up ceremony of the Richmond School took P 1 ac ® on Wednesday, when Mr D. G. Sullivan M P Mr J. Stuart, chairman of the School Committee, and many parents were present. Mr Sullivan presented the dux medal to Laurence Grace, and one to Iris Smith, as well as gardening prizes to Frances Barnden and Edith Bavlis Many attendance certificates were distributed, Violet Nicholls receiving a special prize for six consecutive certificates. _ . . Advantage was takoti of the gathering to present travelling rugs to Mr Rowntree. head master, and Miss Kent, senior mistress, who are retiring on superannuation after over forty years and thirty years’ service respectively. The infant department had a Christmas tree, which was well filled with toys for the little tots. Great excitement prevailed, when Father Christmas arrived, and spent the afternoon at the ST ANDREW’S COLLEGE. The winners of the Entrance Scholarships offered are:— 1. Cuthbert John Wilkins. Waimairi School. (291 marks, possible 450). 2. Errol Desmond Gimson, Elmwood School. (2SI). Next in order of merit were:—William Rutherford Boyce (Waimairi), Brian Harold Mason (Shirley), Rex Beresford Potter (St Albans), Wllil&tn Grigor (Addington). There were nineteen candidates. WAIUTA. There was a good attendances at the annual school concert, held in the hall last Saturday night. Patrons were well pleased with the programme submitted by the scholars. At an interval, Mr J. A. M’Ewin (secretary) thanked those who had helped in making the concert a success. He referred to the satisfactory results obtained by the school during the j-ear, espeoiallj- in the proficiency •examination. Prizes and certificates were presented as follow: Full attendance—Robert Tomlinson. Good attendance —Basil Hempseed, Doris White, Robert Lines and Tom Thorn.
