BEHAVED IN THREATENING MANNER ON TRAMCAR.

William M’Gill, in the Magistrate's Court this morning, was fined £2 and costs for behaving in a threatening manner in a tram, was convicted and discharged for ‘boarding a tram car while it was in motion, and on a charge of damaging the tunic of Willie Craig to the extent of 6s, he was convicted and ordered to make good the damage, in default two days’ imprisonment. Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., was on the bench, Sub-Inspector Fitzpatrick prosecuted, and Mr Gee appeared for the accused. “The defendant boarded a Cranford Street car,” said Sub-Inspector Fitzpatrick. “The tram was slowing down, and he climbed on. lie was in a drunken state. Fie refused to go in off the platform, and made some derrmr about paying his fare. The conductor did not rub him up the wrong way, but went along and collected other fares. The accused started talking to other passengers, who objected on account of his condition. lie behaved in a threatening manner, and at last the tram officials had to put him off. While they were doing that he struck out and used bad language. He ripped the conductor’s uniform tunic and caused damage to the extent of 65.” “This young man had a few drinks in, and he didn’t know what he was doing,” said Mr Gee. “He is very sorry that this occurred. I don’t want to put this forward as an excuse, but the day before he had been presented with a baby daughter, and on such occasions there is liable to be hilarity. He is a married man with a family, and he has a good position in business, and for those reasons I ask that his name should be suppressed.” “I won’t suppress the name,” said the Magistrate. “I hope he gets the publicity he deserves.”
