CREW ESCAPE FROM BURNING CARGO LAUNCH.
DINGHY WAS ALMOST SWAMPED BEFORE SHORE WAS REACHED. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, December 19. The cargo launch, Lone Star, of forty tons, owned by Compton and Morrison, of Auckland, and manned by Neil Compton and W. Kirwan, was destroyed b}' fire to-night. It was bound for Arkle s Bay with a heavy load of cargo, including benzine, when engine trouble developed in a heavy sea. An endeavour was made to turn back, but the engine then failed completely. While the crew were trying to start it again, flames suddenly enveloped the engine, and soon had a strong hold. The crew threw the benzine cargo overboard, and with the spread of the flames their plight became desperate. Finally they had to take to the dinghy, which was almost swamped before they reached the shore. The launch subsequently drifted on to the rocks at North Head, and was later scuttled to prevent her becoming a danger to navigation.
