CROSS-WORD PUZZLE-1148.
The numbered squares are the starting points for words extending across or down, or both. One letter to a square. Words end at first black square encountered or border of puzzle. Pick out a word that fits a given definition and space. This gives you a clue to other words that cross it, and they in turn lo still other words. Jhe solution will appear in next issue.

DOWN. 1— One of the monkey tribe. 2 “Set low” (anag.). 3 and 4 live in the Near East. 5 River of Scotland. 6 Seamen. 7 -River of Germany. 8— Bird of Southern Europe. 9 Fame. 15 — Prussian scientist to whom mankind owes much. 16— Rank. 17— One whose harvest comes after the harvest is home. IS—lmplement (not as vague a clue as it seems). 20—Tree. 21 - Seat of a kind. 25—3 down was called this at one period. 26 -Sad in the extreme. 27 — Weapon. 28 — This door is difficult for a burglar to tackle (free hint for the householder) . 30— Spin. 31— Masculine name that has a feminine form in Canada. 33 —“Then no planets strike, no takes, nor witch hath power to charm” (Hamlet). 35—This makes the billiard ball 30 down. 3(>—-Musical direction.
