The departure of the horses that are to compete at the Auckland Racing Club's meeting has removed some of the best performers from Riccarton for a few weeks. The Manawatu contingent will leave to-night and the Dunedin and West Coast competitors will get away on Sunday night, after Avhich the local tracks will be very quiet through the holiday period.

Sir Roy was very sore when he made his appearance on the track this morning, and A. M’Aulay was undecided about sending him north with Nightmarch. After trotting exercise he improved, and he galloped freelv in a fast six furlong spin, in which he had Battle Colours for a mate. M’Aulay made up his mind after the gallop to take Sir Roy north. He and Nightmarch will leave to-night, to compete at the Manawatu meeting next week, after which they have a choice of meetings for the New Year holidays.

G. J. Pine will take Silygr Coot and Noteworthy north to-night, for the Manawatu and Wairarapa meetings. They are in excellent fettle for their holiday racing and with firm tracks they should perform well.

The Awapuni trainer R. E. Hatch has taken in hand a Grand Court— Cleasanta two-year-old, who will in due course race in the colours of Mr R. A. M’Kenzie.

The Sydney sportsman, Mr F. J. Gore, owner of Perception, arrived in Auckland this week in order to witness his horse race at the coming summer meeting at Ellerslie.

W. Stone will race Silver Paper and Aspiring at the Manawatu meeting next week, after which they may be hurried through to In\'ercargill, where they have engagements on January 2 and 3. They will go north to-night. These two have not done a great deai of fast work lately.

First Sight was given light exercise this morning. He has improved during the last few days, and F. D. Jones will take him north to-night, along with Toawai and Belcaire, for the Manawatu and Marton meetings. Each of these three looks capable of earning monev on the trip.

The Southland Racing Club’s meeting has attracted a strong list of nominations. All the best horses in Otago and Southland are engaged, while there is a fair representation from Canterbury. The Riccarton contingent includes Battle Colours, Rotor, Sarnia, Louise, Cossack Chief and Gav Sonnet, while South Canterbury stables are very much in evidence.

A. G. Campbell, who has been attached to G. New’s stable at Awapuni, is spending a brief holiday in Christchurch, prior to leaving for Australia. He intends to settle in Melbourne, where he should get plenty of riding opportunities among the jumpers. * * 8 *

Last week F. Tilley was a bit uncertain about Laughing Prince fulfilling his engagement in the Auckland Cup. The Quantock colt has never shown a real liking for a long journey, but his form this season suggests that he now has a better chance of getting a distance than ever he had. and .it has been decided that he will be a runner in the big handicap on Boxing Day.

The Hawk has made a full recovery from his recent accident, and is now going as well as ever. All going well, The Hawk will take his. place in the Auckland Railway Handicap.

The Hawke's Bay two-year-old, Admiral Drake, is training on nicely, and it has been settled that the Chief Ruler ; —Tame Duck colt will take his place in the Palmerston North Stakes.

It is announced that R. Reed will ride Supremacy in the Great Northern Foal Stakes. The latest reports regarding Supremacy are that he has been doing nicely and his meeting with the southern cracks is being eagerly awaited. With Reed in the saddle he should lose nothing on the score of horsemanship.

Star God, Joy King. False Scent, Star Stranger and Hunting Day, comprising J. H. Jefferd’s team, have been withdrawn from all engagements at the Auckland Racing Club's sumnjer meeting.

The Australian-bred three-vear-old Staghunter has had his Ellerslie engagements continued so that it looks as if he will go north despite his poor showing at Woodville. Staghunter will have to improve a lot on anything he has shown as a three-year-old to have any chance of winning a race at Auck land.

* Hi * sf: High Falutin’ ran third in the Wanganui Guineas to Consent and Episode and was also third in, the Avondale Guineas to Produce and Gold Money. He is well in the Robin Handicap (hack conditions) on the opening day at Auckland with 81b above the minimum. He has not started since the Auckland spring meeting where he had one race.

The visiting Auckland Cup candidates. Hoylake, Yertigern and Talisker were out working at Ellerslie on Monday and attracted a good deal of attention. They were let off with light tasks and did only easy pace work, writes “Archer.” Hoylake was unmistakable with his grey coat and uncommon markings. He is a very neat horse and his condition is excellent. Talisker is not a prepossessing individual but has thickened since last season and was never better. His stable mate, Yertigern, is a solid customer who has shown form up to a mile and ’a half and may be the pick of the pair in a cup connection.

Ellerslie track-watchers like Gold Tinge, who is a good-looking two-year-old with splendid development. After seeing Gold Tinge run away with the Breeders' Plate at Randwick, writes

“Archer,” I thought he was going to prove really good, but he has been beaten in each start since his return to the Dominion. Still he has always raced creditably and may yet fulfil his early promise. It is possible that he was not just right after his trip to Sydney and now that he has had time to freshen up he might perform better.

Clever, winner of both the two-year-old events at the Woodville meeting last week, is a daughter of Psychology and Miss Cute, an English-bred mare by Charles O’Malle}'. Clever can lay claim to three strains of St Simon, so that it would be a surprise did she not develop the racing trait.

Before the race for the Te Awamutu Cup on Saturday, F. Loomb, trainer of Prodice, who is looked upon as the chief hope of the Aucklanders in the Derby, remarked to an Auckland pressman that he thought she would need a race before being at her best. He certainly summed the position up to a nicety, because it was only in the last furlong that Prodice weakened a little, and though she was fifth at the finish, she was not more than a length and a half away. “That race will do her good, and another before the Derby should see her at her best on Derby da\-.” said her owner-trainer.

The acceptances for this year's Auckland Cup include four Australian-bred horses —Laughing Prince (by Quantock), Goshawk and Corinax (by Magpie), and Vertigern (by Rossendale). As Hovlake (by PoltaVa) hails from England and Tidal (by Sea Sick) from France, the field for the big event at Ellerslie this year will take the cosmopolitan shape. * * * * Some of the Aucklanders appear to hold the opinion that Aussie is next door to a certainty in the Railway Handicap, and they are pointing out his brilliant victory afr-Waipa on Saturday under 10.6 to emphasise their claim. Aussie with 9.9 in the Railway certainly appears to hold safe all he beat at Waipa, but the Railway Handicap field is one which takes some beating. lie will have to carry his 9.9 all the way without a let-up, and it is worth remembering that this has beaten many good sprinters in the past. The highest weight of a winner of the Railway is 9.8, carried by The Workman in 1894. And even then he had to divide the honours with The Dancer, B.S. Hohoro carried 9.6 when he won in 1903; Silver Link 9.0 in 1921, and Reremoana 9.7 in 1925, when he had only half the field to beat, the race being run in divisions. Aussie thus has to create a record weight-carrying performance to win the big sprint on Boxing Day. First-class sprints are very hard to win under such a weight as he has got. There is too much brilliance among the lighter weights who make every ounce tell.

TROTTING NOTES.

Nominations closed yesterday for the summer meeting of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club, which will be held at Addington on January 1 and 2. The club caters for a good class, and owners have made a very fine response. In spite of the fact that many of the best horses will be racing in Auckland, the chief events have attracted very strong fields, and the meeting should provide some great racing.

Exceptionally good acceptances have been received for the first day of the Westport Trotting Club’s meeting, t.o lie held on Boxing Day, and the club’s officials, especially the handicapper, are entitled to be well pleased with the prospects.

The following racehorses left by the ferry steamer Maori for the north last evening: Prince Pointer, Young Blake, Elzear, Glideaway, Lingfield, Nelson Boy, Dalmeny.

.** * * Vesuvius continues to do good work in training, and he is pacing in rar t style at present.

* * 8 * Florrie Pointer is doing plenty of steady work at Addington, and she should race satisfactorily over short courses.

* * * Pageant is in capital form at present. The hard tracks may find him out later, but in the meantime he is standing up to his work in good style.

The trotter Cannonball is back in work again. He seems to come to hand quickly, and apparently he races best soon after a spell. * *• * *

Kiowa still pulls hard, but he is doing a lot of solid work, and he is a useful sort up to a mile and a half.

Hackthorne did not start on the first day at the recent New Brighton meeting, although he was on the course. On the second day, he started in the Summer Handicap, of a mile and a quarter, but he was not prominent. He is doing really well in training work, and he may race, better over a similar distance later in the season.

Meb put up quite a good race on the first day at the recent New Brigli ton meeting, in the Mace Memorial Handicap, and she may now go on and show some of the form she exhibited when she was previously in work. Meb is a good pacer, but she has not improved as much as her early racing indicated. RICCARTON NOTES. Thursday. The weather was fine for the early work at Riccarton this morning, but rain set in later. The number six grass track provided good going. Dutch Money sprinted half a mile in 50 4-ssec and did it well. Lancer and Oriflamb occupied lmin 21sec for six furlongs, but could have done a bit better. Prickles and Full Feather covered seven furlongs in lmin 32sec, without being ridden out. Sir Roy beat Battle Colours over six furlongs in lmin 16 3-ssec, but Battle Colours was not ridden out. Sir Roy was sore when he went out, but he moved freely when galloping. He will leave for the Manawatu meeting tonight. Front Rank beat Honeycomb easily over seven furlongs in lmin 31 2-ssec. and got through her task very attractively. Swoopalong covered seven furlongs by herself in lmin 31 2-osec. Pangolin beat Greyfinch over five furlongs in lmin 4 4-ssec, which was only a fair performance, Greyfinch’s effort being disappointing. She showed plenty of speed in the early stages, doing the first two furlongs in 24sec and three in 37sec, but she was stopping badly at the end. Sudden Storm finished slightly in front of Semper Paratus after doing half a mile in 50sec. Childsplay reeled off five furlongs nicely in lmin 3 l-ssec. Limerick occupied 40 3-ssec in an easy run over three furlongs. Star Raid and Nightmarch were companions over five furlongs. Nightmarch was slightly in front at the winning post in lmin 2 4-ssec. It was a smart gallop and Star Raid impressed, as he was conceding weight to the Derby winner. Caterpillar beat After Ten and Pledge comfortably over five furlongs in lmin 3 2-ssec\ showing a lot of speed in the early stages. Pahautanui finished in front of Gay Bird over six furlongs in lmin ISsec. Malmsey beat Shipshape over seven furlongs in lmin 30 3-ssec. Shipshape tired, after showing pace for the first half-mile. Malmsey went very attractively all through the gallop. Proud Knight covered six furlongs alone in lmin 18 2-ssec, and looked capable of improvement. TRENTHAM NOTES. (Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, December 20. Rain commenced to fall again just, at the end of proceedings at Trentham this morning, all work being disposed of under fine but cloudy conditions, with a cold wind blowing across the course. The inside of the trial grass, although rather uneven in patches, provided very fair going. Endorse was first out and dashed over half a mile in 50sec. Becky Sharp and Dresden China (Tea Tray—Refinement) were companions over half a mile, Becky Sharp finishing in front in 51sec. Historic, who was not out to make time, galloped a mile in lmin 47 2-ssec, the first half being run in 51 2-ssec and the first five furlongs in lmin 5 2-ssec. He was a little sore afterwards, but it is nothing serious. It is not absolutely certain that he will run in the Manawatu Cup, but he may be kept for the second and third days of the meeting. The final decision will be

arrived at later. If he does run, A Fratus will ride him.

Panther went at his own gait over four furlongs and took 54sec. He has become a very lazy track horse, but looks particularly well. Sapient pleased by finishing over half a mile in 50 2-ssec. This filly looks well.

Roi de Val strode down from the halfmile post in 50 2-osec, and pleased by his effort.

Black-eyed Sue, under a pull, took lmin 21 sec to run six furlongs, the last half-mile being run in 54 2-ssec. Quantum and Bourse were restricted to pace work, and others just worked steadily, included Royal Duke, Rory Mor, and Lady Gay. Push appeared to be going easily over half a mile in 50 l-ssec. lie pulls up lame after his work, but soon walks it off.

Rotowhero and Panorama- ran the last half-mile of a working gallop in 55 4-ssec.

Skybird 11., who is to be tried over about a middle distance, was sent six furlongs under a pull in lmin 23isec.

First Money and Duellona w-ent five furlongs, keeping together all the way and finishing up their task in lmin ssec. They ran the last three furlongs in 39sec. Although there was nothing special about the gallop they worked attractively.

Ravine finished well clear of Lady Rene over half a mile in 54 l-ssec.

Decoy Bird led Australis .all the way over seven furlongs in lmin 32 2-ssee. They went fast in the early part of the gallop. Decoy Bird, who is a great track galloper, easily held Australis at the finish.

Kentish Lady strode over six furlongs, going easily, in lmin 24sec. She looks well and shapes like an early winner.

Tourist has been claimed as the name for First Sight’s three-year-old. brother in J. M’Laughlin’s stable, and with Ex Dono he galloped four furlongs this morning in 50sec. Unfortunately after the gallop Tourist was showing signs of lameness in front. He had improved a little before he left the course. Tobaccoland was given easy pace work, with J. T. Young in the saddle. He has done well since coming to Trentham and will lack nothing on the. score of fitness when produced next in public, which will be at the Wairarapa meeting-

WEST COAST RACING CIRCUIT.

OPENING MEETING AT HOKITIKA. The Westland Racing Club’s two days’ race meeting, which opens on Wednesday (Boxing Day ) will be the j first holiday gathering of the West Coast racing circuit. Since the last race meeting on Hokitika racecourse the Westland Club has had the misfortune to lose its two main stands by fire. It was a heavy loss to the club, but the position was pluckily faced, and despite the heavy financial loss the club has replaced the lost accommodation with an enlarged stand and administrative quarters, which will be a surprise to visitors to the races at Hokitika on Boxing Day. Those who have paid a recent visit to the course, now that the works are drawing to a close, are delighted with the arrange ments, which many aver are better and more compact than before. After the Easter meeting the club carried out (just prior to the disastrous fire) the widening of the straight. About twelve feet in width has been added to the straight for its full length, and the whole of the racing track carries a fine grass sward. The convincing ground was perhaps never in better order. The roomy straight will give better facilities than ever for finishes to be fought out to the fullest advantage. Following the fire, the new stand has been placed further back than previously, giving greater lawn

space and a more elevated range for standing room, so that races can be viewed from the ground with the prospiect of a good view. The enlarged stand and its convenient internal arrangement should meet the fullest requirements of patrons. During this week the necessary furnishings are being put in. The afternoon tea room will be complete with all requirements, and is sure to be well taxed during both race days. For financial reasons the club has dropped its luncheon room arrangements, but excellent catering in the tea-rooms is being arranged for. A neat sweets and ice cream .stall is also new, and adjoining the tea room. The two circular bars for the sale of liquor are identical in size and c onvenience, and

access mav be gained front and rear. At the back, near the much enlarged bird cage, there is a soft drinks bar, apart from the main building. The stewards’ and other rooms are well placed, and the weighing and jockeys’ rooms are very convenient. The whole seems to supply a very fine setting, and the conduct of the meetings should be on the usual satisfactory lines. Space has been reserved on the grandstand for the officials, and a raised platform in the bird cage will be a good vantage point to watch the racing from the ground. AH the arrangements for the meeting are now being finalised, and everything should be in first-class order for the meeting

opening on Boxing Day. There are excellent train arrangements from all parts of the Coast, trains running to and from Otira, Reefton and Rewanui on each day of the races, and of course serving all intervening stations, including Greymouth and the Grey Valley. As owners have given liberal support, the club has all the material for a successful meeting, which would be of the greatest help to the fortunes of the Westland Racing Club at this juncture.
