Notes and News. Good programme and fairly steady tran-mission from 4VA Dunedin, last •light. Volume was kept at As —it could have been increased to A 7 about 10 p.m. Xo static and only slight .signs of surging. Stayed with 4YA most of the night. IYA must have kissed the Blarney Stone or suffering from the effects of intoxication from' the exuberance of

its own verbosity! Every time it was tuned in it was a case of talk, talk, talk, in what sounded like an attempt to let Sir Henry Irving or Miss Ellen Terry know exactly where they get off! They had “Macbeth’’ on at IYA. Fearful stuff it sounded at this distance.

■ And—oh, well, it’s not only the amateur j actor who is obsessed with the idea he | or she is a great Shakespearean actor! j Fortunately, one isn’t compelled to i listen in to a form of entertainment j that has to be seen as well as heard jto be appreciated. IYA faded a bit 1 now and then and reception was handi- | capped by some mushy static. No Oswalds on lYA’s wave. Not surprisI infe ’ • Nothing doing amongst the Austra- ; Hans last night. There seemed to be | an extra thick blanket suspended between the two countries, as not one of | their stations could be heard up till ! 11.15 at better strength than A 3. There | was very little static about. ! From the Studios. 1 Gems from the bright and successful “To-night’s the Night,” the well-known musical play of Rubens, will be sung at IYA this evening. The vocalists will be Miss Alma M'Gruer, Miss Beryl Smith, Mr F. Simpson and Mr Duncan Black. Elocutionary numbers will be given by Mr Alan M’Skimming. The Wellington Municipal Tramways Band will supply many interesting items from 2YA this evening, including “Pride of the Valley,” “L’Amour do Village,” “The Flying Dutchman,” and other delightful numbers. The Lyric

Four will give concerted and solo numbers, and Mrs M. Thomas, elocutionist, will appear in two items. Another interesting lecturette on “Native Birds” will be given by Mr Johannes Ander- « X X At 3Y A this evening, Handel’s magnificent oratorio “Messiah,” will be presented. This will be the special feature of the programme, and it will occupy . the complete second half. Besides the studio soloists, the choir of the East Belt Wesley Church will be contributes- Studio Trio will provide the instrumental music. Christmas carols will also be a of the evening. Silent day at 4YA. Radio Society. The local society meets in the club rooms. St Asaph Street, at 8 o’clock this evening. Mr C. R. Russell will speak on “Television and the construction of television apparatus.” THE S.-G. S.W. TWO. In response to a number of requests a schematic diagram and list of parts for a screen-grid short-wave two-valve receiver are published to-day. The indicating letters and figures in the sche-

matic diagram printed below correspond with those in the context. Parts Required. Cl, C 2—2 S.L.F. variable condensers, each 7-plate. C3—l S.L.F. variable condenser, 13-plate. C 4, C 7—2 fixed condensers, each .001 mfd. C 5, C 6—2 fixed condensers, each 1.0 mfd. CB—Grid condenser, .0001 mfd. LI, L2, L4—Set short-wave coils. L 3, Ls—2 short-wave R.F. chokes. Rl—2o ohm rheostat. R2 —grid leak, 10 megohms, and mount. R3—lo ohm rheostat. C—l one and a half volt “C” battery—flashlight tvpe. 2 shock-absorber valve sockets. 1 twocircuit filamental control jack. 1 terminal strip with seven terminals. If coils are to be home-made. 6 plugs and 2 receptacles will be required. 1 ebonite or bakelite panel 7 by 21 inches. 1 baseboard, 9 by 20 by £in. 2 shield cans. 3 vernier (slow-motion) dials. 1 screen-grid valve. 1 detector valve (UX2OOA type). 6-volt “A” battery. 90-volt “B” battery. Construction Notes. The tuning range is from 15 to 140 metres, effected by means of three sets of interchangeable coils. For loud speaker reception a two-stage audio amplifier should be used. The set requires a 6-volt “A” battery and takes 45, GO and 180 \ l clts “B,” although it has given satisfactory results with 135 and 45 volts, respectively, on the plate and the grid. The screen-grid valve and coils, with the first variable condenser Cl should be shielded; the rest of the components being contained in a separate shielded compartment. The material lor the shielding should be half-hard brass or copper and should be slightly less than one-thirtv-second of an inch thick. If aluminium shielding is used this metal should be one-eleventh of an inch thick.
