Dr and Mrs P. Stanley Foster returned to Christchurch yesterday after an extended tour abroad. Mrs Sholto Douglas, Ethc.lton. has returned home after a brief stay in Christchurch. Mrs H. T. Little and Miss White have returned to Hawarden after a brief stay in Christchurch. Mrs S. E. Campbell, of Wellington, left Christchurch for the West Coast this morning.

Sir John and Lady Findlay. Wellington. arrived in Christchurch this morning and are staving at the United Ser vice Hotel.

Staff Nurse M Carthy and Nurse Ellice Nelson, of the staff of the Christchurch Hospital, and Sister Roper, of the Kaikoura Hospital, have resigned. Miss 11. M. Tilley s resignation from the staff of the Avonside Girls’ High School was received by the Board of Governors of Canterbury College at its meeting yesterday. The resignation of Miss P. M Clurg l as drill and games mistress at the ! Christchurch and Avonside Girls High j Schools has been accepted as from Dcj cember 31. Mrs R. S. Ward, accompanied by her ' daughters, Edith and Nola. has left for | Sydney. Miss Edith Ward continues her journey to Singapore, where she is to be married early next year. At her home in Knowles Street, on Tuesday, Miss Molly Chapman was hostess at a happy little party given in Ttonour of Miss Nell Buddo. whose marriage will be celebrated next week. During the afternoon Miss Chapman’s guests enjoyed an entertaining competition, of which Miss Molly Black eventually proved the winner. Miss Buddo received from her friends a, large number of useful articles suitable for the furnishing of her future kitchen. Among those present were:—Mesdames Gordon Coull, Guy Cotterill. Mrs P. N. Quartermain is spending a. holiday in Auckland. Miss Diana Allen, “ Mill House,” Fendalton, will leave to-day for a visit to Timaru. Miss . Hilda Mulvaney Gray left yesterday for a visit to the Franz Josef Glacier. Mrs R. Webb and Miss Evans (Wellington) are at the United Service Hotel. Mr A. L. Moore. Director of the Technical College. New Plymouth, and Mrs Moore, are the guests of Mr and Mrs Bowring, Papanui. Mr and Mrs Kenneth Robinson and their two little daughters. Fendalton, are leaving on Monday for Ilanmer Springs. Mr and Mrs 0. 11. Holmes, Opawa Road, will leave on Saturday for a holiday visit to Akaroa. The many friends of Mrs Montague Clark, Disraeli Street, will be pleased to learn she is progressing favourably after her operation. Sir Francis and Lady Boys will spend Christmas with their son in ITawke's Bay. Mrs Gibbings (England), who has been staying with Mrs J. G. L. Vernon, is at present the guest of Lady Wigram (Park Terrace). Mrs George Buchanan. and her family (Fendalton) are leaving this week to spend the holidays at the Rakaia Fishing Iluts. Mr and Mrs W. J. LeCren and Miss Nancye LeCren (Murray Place) are leaving on Saturday for a holiday visit to Arthur’s Pass. Mrs H. D. Acland and her daughters (Park Terrace) left yesterday for a holiday visit to Mount Peel. Mr and Mrs Denb- are arriving from Melbourne to spend Christmas with their daughter, Mrs T. F. Gibson (Fendalton). The Misses Eileen and Ethne Jackman left Christchurch last evening for Wellington, eii route for Sydney and Melbourne, where they will be the guests of Dr and Mrs Newell. The engagement is announced of Lily, second daughter of Mr S. Reynish, Pigeon Bay, to Cornelius, youngest son of Air and Mrs C. S. Ward, Denver, Colorado, U.S.A. Mrs T. M. Hunter and the Misses Hunter, Lyttelton, will leave this week for a visit to Wellington, -where they will be the guests of Mrs W. Cable, Levy Street.
