MUD BATHS GIVEN CHRISTCHURCH CITIZENS
USERS OF COLOMBO STREET SPLASHED.
To-day motorists, cyclists and pedestrians were treated to mud baths in Colombo Street South. Every vehicle passing threw up showers of filthy, sticky slush from the innumerable potholes which scar the surface of this street from Lichfield Street to the Sydenham Post Office. Last week's rain washed out the loose tarry gravel deposited in the holes by the City Council and Tramway Board workmen. To-day’s rain and traffic kept the holes filled with mud r jfy water. Every sheets of water from under its wheels, splashing liberally any vehicle it passed. In many cases cyclists and pedestrians received the full force of the unwelcome shower to the detriment of clothes and tempers.
The Tramway Board is responsible for the maintenance of the strip of road between the lines and for about a foot on either side. For months users of Colombo Street have complained of the condition of these portions of the road, but very little has been .done to improve matters. Just how bad a state of disrepair the road has fallen into to-day's downpour showed.
