SCHOOL PRIZES.

ST MICHAEL’S. St Michael's School held the annual break up and prize giving on Wednesday night. The hall was crowded with an appreciative audience who thoroughly enjoyed the varied programme which consisted of dances, action songs and three plays. The Rev C. Perry read the excellent report of the inspectors of religious Knowledge, and stressed to the parents t.ne necessity of continuing the good w °i;k begun in the school. WHARENUI SCHOOL. The annual prize-giving: of the Wharenui School took place at the school on Wednesday. The pupils of the infant department were entertained at two Christmas trees, each child being presented with a toy and a book. By courtesy of the D.1.C.. SUMNER D.H.S. The annual distribution of prizes in connection with the seconuary department and the senior classes of the primary department of the Sumner District High School was held in the Sumner Town Hall on Tuesday evening, a very large iratberlng of parents and friends being present. The chairman of the committee, Mr J. E. Tait, presided, and the school prizes, were presented by Mrs W. 11. Nicholson, Mayoress of Sumner. Mr J. M’Combs, M.P., presented the sports awards. The head master, Mr G. F. Allen, reported on the excellent promise shown in cricket, football and athletics made by pupils of the school. An ex-pupil, R. Dobson, had been selected as one of the Canterbury cricket representatives to play Otago. In football, the school middle-weights had done well. The school roll was rather lower than in previous years. During the next year, beginning after the holidays, the Sumner District High School would be organised on a different footing. The primary department was to end with Standard IV. Standard V. would be known as Form 1., Standard VI. as Form 11., etc. This had been approved by the Department. Mr J. M’Combs, M.P., and the Hon J. Barr addressed parents and scholars, and spoke appreciatively of the work being done by the committee and staff. The distribution of prizes to the junior classes of the primary school was held In the Town Hall on Wednesday afternoon, when Mrs M’Combs made the presentation of the school prizes, and Mrs Nicholson of the sports awards.
