Provisional entries for the Dominion Chess Congress close with the secretary at Wellington on Thursday of this week. At the last meeting of the New Zealand Chess Association a vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Charles Blackburne, president of the Gisborne Chess Club, for his kind offer to donate a trophy for competition by the minor clubs of the North Island. The association will be glad to receive suggestions regarding the best way of arranging this telegraphic contest. The coming tourney will once more provide the Dominion with a chess champion, the title having been vacant since t.h'e lamented death of Mr A. W. O. Davies on January 16 last. This was the first occasion of a New Zealand chess champion dying while holding the title. The Congress will open at 10 a.m. on Boxing Day, in the Education Board Building, Mercer Street. Wellington (next Free Public Library). J. R. Capablanca points out that on E. D. Bogoljubow’s record, since 1914. against Dr Lasker, Dr Alekhine and himself, ther*e is no warrant for Bogoljubow’s challenge for the world title, the figures being; Against Lasker be has won one and lost three; against Alekhine he has won one and lost five, and against Capablanca he has lost five right off. _____________________
