CITY WILL CONTRIBUTE TO MAINTENANCE OF ROAD ON HILLS.
At the invitation of the Heathcote County Council a conference was held j recently of representatives of the County Council and the committee of the City Council, at which the county’s representatives requested that the city should contribute towards the cost oi reconstructing and maintaining the portion of the road between the Takahe and the Kiwi. It was stated that the Heathcote County Council proposed spending approximately £IOOO per year for the next five or six. years for the purpose of widening and metalling the road. Of this amount the sum of £SOO will be contributed by the Main Highways Board by way of £1 for £1 subsidy. The estimated cost of maintenance is £250. to which the Highways Board contributes on a £2 for £1 basis. A traffic tally’ taken by the county for a period of one week showed that approximately 70 per cent of the traffic using the road came from within the city and only 1 per cent from the county. The county’s representatives at the conference suggested that the city should contribute 60 per cent of the local bodies’ share of maintenance and construction of the road, the coun- j cil’s contribution to commence from the beginning of the next financial At last night’s meeting of the City j Council the Works Committee report- j ed that, in view of the large extent | to which the road is used by residents of the city’, it was of opinion that a ; contribution of 60 per cent by’ the city was justified and, therefore, recom-j mended that the proposal be ratified, j The city already contributed the sum of £SO per ahnum towards the main- j tenance of this road and. if the new j proposal was approved of, this contri-; button would not be continued. The recommendation was approved, j
