TIMARU WOOL SALE. Per Press Association. TIMARU, December 17. A full and representative bench of buyers faced the rostrum in the Theatre Royal to-day for the opening wool sale of the season in Timaru. Some 11,984 bales were submitted, an increase of 2137 bales on the offering at the first sale last season. The wool came forward in fairly good order, but as a result of the unfavourable weather experienced during the spring, the standard of selection was not up to that of the first sale last year. A number of clips were bright and well grown, but the hogget wool generally showed signs of tenderness. In many cases, valuations tended to be a fraction more than buyers were prepared to offer, but nevertheless about 90 per cent of the total offering was cleared. Continental and Bradford firms were the principal operators and bidding was fairly keen. Dominion mills purchased most of the top lots, showing preference for good half-bred. Although prices were down as compared with rates obtained at the corresponding sale of last season, values were on par with those at the sale held recently at Christchurch. The range of prices was: MERINO: Super 182 d to 19|d. Average I7sd to 181 d. Inferior l6d to 17d. HALF-BRED: Super 21d to 23$d. Average 19d to 20$ d. Inferior 18d to 19d.
