Cost of work don© by the Tramway Board’s own workmen was referred to at the meeting of the board yesterday afternoon. The Works and Traffic Committee reported that tenders of £l2O and £132 10s w r ere received for construction of a tip body for a lorry truck. The body was constructed in the board’s workshop at a cost of £96, including £25 for overhead charges. Mrs E. R. M’Combs remarked upon the “great saving made as a result of the board doing its own work on that occasion.” Mr W. Hayward: It’s a pity that Mr Williamson is not present. He would say something about “ overhead, overhead.” (Laughter.) Tenders are now being invited by the Public Works Departmeent for a new* post office for the Shirley district. The building, which is to be erected on the site of the present Shirley post office in Warrington Street, near the terminus .of the No. 16 tram, will be an attractive brick structure. A Small | entrance porch opening on the west side will be provided. The public space inside the building will be 15ft by lift, and behind it will be the mail room, 21ft by 19ft. There will also be two telephone rooms.
