BARRACKS MAY PROVE TOO SMALL FOR WINTER SHOW.

MANUFACTURERS HAVE PLANS IN VIEW.

The annual report of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, which will be presented to the annual meeting to-morrow night, states that the membership stands at 296, including three honorary life members, to whom the association is indebted for special services. The statement of accounts discloses a satisfactory balance-sheet, although the income for the year has been exceeded by expenditure. It is to be noted, however, that the ordinary inome account did not benefit by any exhibition profits. The propaganda account received the benefit of £149 from Winter Show profits, and the capital fund received £SOO. The second Winter Exhibition, under the joint management of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and the Manufacturers’ Association, was held in August, and in addition to returning a reasonable profit to both associations for the purposes of their association work, the exhibition itself was very favourably commented upon by visitors from both town and country, and by manufacturers, who, generally speaking, report good business and increasing attention of the public to New Zealandmade goods. It seemed clear to the joint management that, if the public continued to show increasing interest and the exhibition could be put on as attractively every year, the Defence Barracks would prove too small a building in which to hold the exhibition with any degree of comfort, both for the exhibitors and the public. This matter was now under consideration by the promoters of the winter show, and several building sites had already been submitted.

“Our assistance in forming an association in South Canterbury was one of the most important organising events in the year,” continues the report. The New Zealand Sawmillers’ Federation has offered to give a cup for competition at the next winter show by manufacturers of furniture. Your executive is indebted for courteous assistance to several Government Departments, particularly the Department of Industries and Commerce, whose cooperation and assistance is of increasing advantage to us each year. We also appreciate the fact that the Stores Control Board is giving every consideration to New Zealand manufacturers and is placing its orders with local factories whenever it possibly can. The Women’s Auxiliary have assisted us in many ways in connection with the work of the association, and in spreading the gospel of N.Z.-made goods. A special sub-committee has the matter of a trade mark in hand, and will be ready to submit designs to the federation as soon as the difficulties with regard to registration under the act can be overcome. Next year we hope to have a special gathering and celebration of the association’s jubilee.”

The report of the organiser (Mr E. IT. Marriner) states that during the

year thirty-six new members have been added to the roll, which makes the association the largest in membership in New Zealand. He visited twenty schools and distributed 300 certificates to the successful scholars in the winter show school essay competition. Last February he paid a visit to Greymouth to organise a New Zealand shop window display in connection with the Greymouth Jubilee. Over fifty windows during jubilee week were displaying New Zealand-made goods. The income, including £241 brought forward, totalled £798, and the expenditure £613, leaving a credit balance of £lB4.
