CHRISTCHURCH. (Before Mr E. D. Mosley. S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A statutory first offender for drunkenness was fined 10s, and car hire 2s, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. - , A statutory first offender was lined 20s, in default twenty-four hours’ lm; prisonment. ORDER BROKEN. Mary Ann Windsor was fined 52, in default seven days’ imprisonment for a breach of her prohibition order. Eor drunkenness, she was convicted and discharged. ASSAULT ALLEGED. Archie Lynn (Mr Burns) was charged that, on November 17, at? assaulted Margaret M’Dermott so as to cause her actual bodily harm. Sub-Inspector Fitzpatrick asked tor a remand, as the police had not y® been able to subpoena an independent witness. He said that the accused had been living with M Dermott, an had come home drunk and knocked her about. « A remand till November 22 tvao granted. NAME SUPPRESSED. A young man appeared on a charge of indecently assaulting a .male. At the request of the nolice, he was remanded till November- 27. Bail was allowed at £2OO, with one surety of £2OO. Mr Thomas, who appeared for the accused, said that there would be several facts placed before the Court which might merit the suppression of the name, and he asked for an interim suppression. This, was granted. Mr Thomas said that the accused was of good character, and came of an excellent family. MAINTENANCE OASES. (Before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M.) ON WIFE’S PROPERTY. Ernest Harwill was charged with, on November 3, trespassing on his wife’fc property during the currency Of a separation order. Sub-Inspector Fitzpatrick' stated that at 2 a.m. on November 3, defendant went to a house occupied by his wife at 25, Hastings Street, Sydenham. He knocked at the door, and practically demanded admission. He went away when told to do so, but returned. When the police were summoned they found him lying in a wash-house adjoining. Constable Fibbe stated that defendant was singing, talking and mumbling to himself, just like a man in a drunken state. Defendant was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months."

Gordon Percy Aston, for failing to maintain a child, was fined £3 and sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment with hard labour, the warrant to be suspended for forty-eight hours to allow of the payment of £6 15s arrears.

OTHER CASES. An order against Maurice F. Johnstone for 5s per week maintenance for his mother was increased to 10s a week. George William Smith was ordered to pay 10s a week towards the support of two grandchildren. An affiliation order was made against Robert Whitelaw. James Hannan was ordered to pay os a week towards the support of a sister, who was in the care of the State. For breach of a maintenance order for two children at the rate of 35s a week. Ernest Henry Healey was sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment with hard labour, the warrant to be suspended provided arrears of £l3 13s were paid off at the rate of 10s a week, in addition to the amount of the current order. Garratt William Gaynor was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment with hard labour, the warrant to be suspended so long as he paid 10s a week off arrears of £24 for maintenance of his -wife, in addition to current payments. Thomas John Laughton Banfield was sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment with hard labour for being £57 5s in arrears on an order for maintenance of a child at the rate of £1 a week, the warrant to be suspended as long as he paid 5s a week off arrears. “The police have had great difficulty in locating this woman, who has been living with a man ami going under an assumed name,” said Sub-Inspector Fitzpatrick, when Ida Emily Kitchen was charged with being' £26 17s in arrears on an order for 2s 6d for support of a child. Defendant, who made no answer when she was asked if she were single, was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment with hard labour, the warrant to be suspended so long as she paid 7s 6d a week off arrears. TRAFFIC CASES. (Before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) iXsobeyed signals. For failing to comply with traffic inspector’s signals, Frederick Chapman was fined 30s and costs, and Arthur Frank Wright was fined 20s and costs. NO LICENSE. Archie D. Wilson, who made a voluntary appearance, was fined 5s for driving without a license. SPEEDING. Albert James Rodda and Thomas Winder, both charged with driving motor-cycles at a dangerous speed, appeared voluntarily and were each fined 3 ° S ' STOPPED TOO SOON. For stopping his car before bringing it to the near side of the street Henry F. Robertson was fined 10s. NO TAIL LIGHT. Gerald Combridge was fined 10s for having no tail light on his car.
