SWIMMING THE STRAIT.

BY

SINBAD.

Once more a Cook Strait swim is planned: two enterprising girls prepare, to splash across from land to land, no doubt to save the steamer fare. Miss Gleitza is first upon the scene, w’ith honours won in distant seas, and in the Cook Strait waters green, she is prepared to do a freeze. But hope of high aquatic fame, attracts not English girls alone; New Zealand possesses for this game, a candidate, Miss Copplestone. Has she before the terrors quailed, of such a journey ? Not a bit. Last year a fellow' tried and failed, but she has hopes of doing it. Seagoing folk who know the scene, opine her task is pretty tough; I know that strip of seething green, believe me, it can be quite rough. If she can tame the angry sea, with joy our spirits it will fill: she’s welcome to the task for me —the Maori will convey me still.
