STRIKERS REBUFFED BY CARTERS’ REFUSAL TO JOIN WITH THEM.

RAILWAYMEN NOW BEING APPROACHED,

<United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) MELBOURNE. October 1,1. Though they were rebuffed by the drivers’ and carters' refusal to join the strike, the militants of the watersiders’ council of action arc endeav-

ouring to extend the dispute to the railwaymen, and other organisations, including the tug-boat men. A motion declaring the Victoria Dock “black" is expected to be carried at the afternoon meeting, to which the railway-men’s representatives have been invited. The railwaymen are at present handling goods discharged on the wharves by volunteers. An attempt was made to interfere with carters at Port Melbourne, bales of wool being dumped from lorries by strikers. The drivers managed to ge‘ them reloaded, amidst the jeers of the crowd. The arrival of the police pre vented further molestation. The shipowners are anxious to recommission coastal vessels, but will not decide until the attitude of the seamen at a.ll ports has been defined. Men holding good discharges and not members of the Australian Seamen’s Union offered to man the ships. Victorian seamen at a meeting to-day decided to refuse to man any ships. At Brisbane a mass meeting of watersi ders and seamen to-day adopted a resolution demanding the Australasian Council of Trades Unions and the combined unions executive to caff upon all union watersiders throughout Australia to cease work. Another resolution demanded that overseas seamen be called out, and that billeting be arranged for them.—Australian Press Association.
