SALVATION ARMY TO HOLD STREET DAY.
On Mile End Waste the London f it; Council have placed a tablet bearing the inscription “ Here William Booth commenced the work of the Salvation Army, July 5, 1865.” Upon this spot, watching sliive.ring little children weeping outside the “gin palaces.’ William Booth received the thought, the thought became an idea, the idea 1 ecame a movement which in State** ra: L is called a Reformation; in Art a Renaissance, and in Religion a Revival. That was sixty-four years ago. To-day it has been said, “ Should the Sal vation Army be withdrawn from the City of London, 6000 additional policemen would be needed in the* - great metropolis .” The Mayor of Auckland said recently, at a public gathering, that he had spent the day inspecting Salvation Army Institutions, commencing at the Maternity Hospital and finishing at the Eventide Home. “ The Salvation Army,” he said, “ lias organisation for taking care of one from the time of birth to the end of life.” There are hospitals, orphanages. Rescue Home**. Prison Gate Homes, Workmen s Homes,. Hostels, Shelters %nd Soup Kitchens. But the Salvation Army claims that their best work is not in providing material comfort for tho.-e who have lost their way—this is but a means to an end. Providing a home for an orphan is a commendable work but transforming a lifd is always the great object. Once again the Salva tion Army appeals to the generous public to assist liberally on their street day, which is to be held to-mor-row, Friday.
