A motion of sympathy with Mr Syd Hickmott in the death of his fathet was passed by the Canterbury Rugby Union at its meeting last evening. Mr F. W. Brinsden, a member of the Auckland City Council, underwent a serious operation in a private hospital on Friday. Mr Justice MacGregor will go to Dunedin on October 25 to take the criminal sittings at the end of the month, and other business. Mr L. B. Beale, British Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, is now due at Singapore on his return to the Dominion. He will conduct a special investigation into general trade conditions and prospects of British trade in the Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States, and expects to leave for Wellington about the middle of December, arriving about a month later.

Mr J. M. Adam, who for eighteen months has occupied the position of Official Assignee, Registrar and Clerk of the Court at the Invercargill Court office and has been promoted to the position of Official Assignee and Registrar of the Supreme Court in Dunedin, has taken up his new duties. Mr J. Wood (chairman of the Waimakariri River Trust) was unable to attend yesterday's meeting of the trust as he had entered a hospital ui Wellington to undergo an operation. In a letter to the tru&t, Mr Wood said that it would be four or five weeks before he would be able to return to work, and he regretted that he would not be able to come to Christchurch for the loan poll on October 01. It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mr Wood.
