London's fancy pigeon population will soon be 2000 less than it was last year. Then perhaps people will notice what students cf bird life have known for years, namely, that the wood pigeon, or ring dov’e, is increasing rapidly in the metropolis, says the “ Daily Chronicle.” Fifty years ago this bird, now so familiar in all open town spaces, was never seen in London. The first pair, according to the late W. H. Hudson, nested, in Buckingham Palace Gardens during the early 'eighties. The acclimatisation since then is remarkable, especially as the ring dove lays only two eggs and these on a frail platform of a nest.

The Central Relief Depot in Bedford Row was open again to-day after having been closed yesterday, and another large batch of applications were dealt with. There is some possibility that the depot will close down finally on Friday next. In the meantime the •tocks of clothing on hand are being distributed among needy families. The depot workers would be glad to receive further donations of foodstuffs to enable them to carry on for the remainder of this week.
