M’Keen, M.P. for Wellington South, who has been ill for several weeks, has now recovered, and he resumed his seat in the House of Representatives yesterday. Amongst those registered at V arner’s Hotel are Messrs E. H. Lough and G. Crow (Dunedin) and F. Hurley (Wellington). Mr J. C. Young (Palmerston North) is a guest at the Clarendon Hotel, Messrs A. I, Collins and J. C. Hill (Waimate) are amongst tho.se sta3'ing at the United Service Hotel. Mr J. G. Spedding, of Sydney, arrived by the Maheno on Tuesday, and will spend three months’ holiday in New Zealand. Surgeon-Commander T. O'Riordan, R_N , arrived on WMafetday by the lonic, and will join H.M.S. Philomel. Other naval oncers arriving by the same, boat were:—Engineer-Commarid-er C. Baker, R.N., who will join the Dunedin; Lieutenant-Commander R. Spencer, R.N. (Veronica) ; SurgeonLieutenant F. Quinn, R.N. (Laburn num), and Lieutenant W. Dallmever, R.N. (Dunedin).

Mr James Hislop, who retired recently from the position of Under-Sec-retary to the Department of Internal Affairs, has been appointed Officer de l’lnstruction Publique, on the proposal of M. Paul Serre, French Consul in Auckland. The French Government was thus pleased to recognise the services rendered by Mr Ilislop to the French missions under General Pau and Admiral Gilly.

Mr G. R. Hunter leaves this evening for the North Island on holiday. Dr T. Fletcher Telford, Medical Officer of Health, left last night for Wellington. Professor Edward Percival, of Leeds University, who has accepted the chair of biology at Canterbury University College, will probably be leaving for New Zealand with his wife and daughter in December.

Sir R. Heaton Rhodes was a passenger by last night's ferry steamer from the north.

Mr T. L. Craigie, who has been manager of the Britannia 'Theatre, Wellington, for the past three and a half years, has. been appointed manager of the King's Theatre. Mi* W. Kemball* jun., has taken over the Tata mount Theatre.

Mr R. H- BOyd, who has been appointed Chief Postmaster at Wellington, in succession to Mr .M’Crae, retired, joined the service in Ilawera in 1890. From there he gradnated as a junior clerk to Wanganui, and after twenty-seven years' service went to the Hamilton office as senior clerk. Two

years later he was appointed postmaster at Morrinsville, and in 1921 became Chief Postmaster at the Thames. He was promoted in 1925 to be Chief Postmaster at Hamilton, where he remained until his appointment to Wellington. Mr J. W. Mawson, the newly-appoint-ed Director of Town Planning, has arrived in Wellington. Dr J. W. M’Breartv, of Greymouth, arrived in Christchurch by the express from tke West Coast last evening. Mr C. E. Bonner, manager for J. C. Williamson, Ltd., left for the West Coast yesterday to arrange for a tour of the New English Comedy Company.

Mr G. W. Lowes, mine manager of the Mahakipawa Goldfields, Ltd., has received advice that he has been elected an Associate of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London. Appreciation of the services of Mr H. C. Harrison, who has been honorary secretary of the association for the past twenty-six years, was expressed at last night’s meeting of the Canterbury Athletic Clubs* Protection Association.

Mr J. Tucker, an officer of the Young Australia League, arrived at Wellington by the Marama from Sydney. Mr Tucker will travel through New Zealand making arrangements for a party of boys from the Dominion to tour North America with a contingent of Australian boys. Mr R. A. Loughnan, the veteran "Wellington journalist, returned from a visit to Sydney by the Marama. Mr Loughnan states that the various functions in connection with the Eucharistic Congress provided the people of Sydney with the biggest thrill of their existence.

At a special meeting of the Wellington Hospital Board yesterday, Miss A. H. Cookson, who for the past eight years has held the position of Matron of the Whangarei Hospital, was appointed Matron of the Wellington Hospital. Miss Cookson holds State medical, surgical, and midwifery certificates, and the Truby King nursing and children’s welfare certificate. At last night’s meeting of the Canterbury Athletic Clubs’ Protection Association, opportunity was taken to present the chairman, Mr Angus Donaldson, who has been honorarj' auditor of the association for twenty-five years, with a silver Eversharp pencil. In making the presentation, Mr K. R. Buchanan referred to Mr Donaldson’s services to the association and wished him many years of continued association with it.

Cardinal Ceretti, the Papal Legate to the Eucharistic Congress in Sydney, has many friends in New Zealand, having visited this country as an Archbishop in 1916, when he was Apostolic Delegate to Australasia. He had originally intended to return home by one of the Pacific itiail steamers, which Would have given him the OppOrturtitj* of a day of tw'o at Auckland. Just b*f6fe Archbishop O’Shea, who arrived at Wellington by the Marama, sailed for New Zealand, however, the Cardinal told him that he had found it necessary to remain in Australia a little longer than he had anticipated, and that this would mean he would now have to sail from Australia direct.
