LEST WE FORGET.

Rangiora had a very fine record of war work, over £BOOO being subscribed towards the various war funds, besides an enormous quantity of soldiers’ comforts being contributed and sent to the front. The fallen soldiers’ cenotaph, which occupies a prominent site in the main street, given by Mr Charles beech, was erected at a cost of about £I4OO, including the fence surrounding it; £7OO being voted from the borough funds, £SOO from the county funds, and £2OO was subscribed for the tablets on which are inscribed the names of eighty-three soldiers from the borough and county who paid the supreme sacrifice. The base of the monument is of blue granite, the cenotaph is Sydney sandstone, and the tablets black Aberdeen granite. Forming a good background for the monument is the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s hall, one of the most handsome public buildings in the town, erected three } r ears ago at a cost of over £2OOO. The site for this, too, was a gift from Mr C. Leech.
