HARRIERS.

SUMNER ROAD RACE TO-MORROW.

A meeting of the Harrier Sub-com-mittee was held on Tuesday, when arrangements were finalised for to-mor-row's race from Sumner to the Show Grounds. The route, which has been approved by the chief traffic inspector, is along Ferry Road and Moorhouse Avenue, then along Lincoln Road into the Show Grounds at the main gate in Lincoln Road.. Competitors will be required to run once round the Show Grounds before finishing. The race must finish before three o’clock, so the limit men will be started from Sumner at 1.45 sharp. Runners will go to Stunner by the 12.50 p.m. tram. The handicappers, Messrs G. G. Lock wood and C. H. Taylor, have declared the following handicaps:—G. L. Austin scr, C. G. Mahan sc.r, J. M’Kee scr, A. D. Kane 30sec, B. 11. Wood 3min 30sec, C. F. Jones 3min 30sec, A. Park 3min 30see, T. D. Pascoe smin, L. T. Harper 6min, J. T. Hobbs 7min. F. Brown 7min, J. K. Martin 7min. E. C. Jackson Bmin, S. Odell Bmin, S. Richardson llmin, JMosley llmin, W. B. Poulton llmin, R. Rollinson 12min, S. Phillips 12min, R. Weston 12min, A. Miles 14min, E. Knight 14min, H. Oookson 15min, R. Neilson 15min, H. T. Lawrence 17min and G. Marsden 17min. Of the back markers, Kane and Mahan read well, and they should have a great race for fastest time, but they need to do exceptionally well to catch Neilson, who is liberally treated. Poulton, a Dunedin runner, is probably the fittest man of the field. If he starts, he is sure to run well. Si it X Baptist Club. The Baptist club concluded its season last Saturday with the club championship over a course of five miles and a half through the Mount Pleasant and Heathcote districts. There were twelve starters, the detailed result being as follows: Min. Sec. 1. F. Collin 32 13 2. A. Park 32 20 3. B. H. Wood 32 25 4. G. C. Adams 32 38 5. R. S. Odell . 33 10 6. R. Neilson .... 37 50 7. L. Fulford 37 54 8. E. R. Simpson .... 39 15 9. G. Moorcroft ...... 39 56 10. A. Miles 40 10 11. M. Watt 40 38 As was expected, F. Collin gained the championship, but only after a very exciting finish, beating A. Park by only 7sec. It is interesting to. note that the difference between the times of the first four men was only 25sec, which shows that there is little to choose between the leading runners of the club. In conjunction with the championship event, a sealed handicap, was run, the winner being A. Park, with B. H. Wood and R. S: Odell second and third respectively. Afternoon tea was supplied by the club captain, Mr B. H. Wood. The club’s first and very successful season was brought to a close by an enjoyable social evening at the residence of Mr E. Vincent Smith, Riccar* ton, when prizes won during the season were presented. Bennett Memorial Road Race. The annual contest between the Wellington harrier clubs for the Bennett Memorial Cup was held last Saturday afternoon, and resulted in a win for the Wellington Club with A. Stevens (Scottish) the best individual runner. The A. and B teams ran together and the B teams’ race was won by the Olympic Club, with A. Hiyon (Wellington) the first man home. The course was slightly different from that followed in previous years, as, instead of starting from the boating sheds on Clyde Quay and finishing at the Basin Reserve, the runners first circled the course on the Basin Reserve once and ended with another round of the green. Although the distance was consequently a little shorter, the time recorded, 33min 19sec, was very good. Hivon was the eleventh man to finish, and took 35min 18sec. A cold southerly, with intermittent showers before and after the race, was unpleasant for the spectators, but no rain fell during the race, and the conditions generally left little to be desired for harrier racing. A pleasing feature was that of the sixty-one competitors who left the Basin Reserve no less than sixty completed the course. P. Wilson, who finished fourth, was half a minute behind. Then followed G. Morris, Sheppard, Andrews, Pederson, Whelan, Bibby and Hivon. The winning team was Wellington, with 36 points, made up as follows: Morris 5, Sheppard 6. Whelan 9, and Mulcahy 16. Hutt Valley 42, Olympic 43, and Scottish and Brooklyn 44 finished in that order.

The first six B runners were A. Hivon, T. M’Lorinan, R. Spence, C. Tutty, Gordon, and Attley. M’Lorinan, Tutty, Gordon and Attley scored points for Olympic, who won with 17 points, from Wellington 24, and Brooklyn 44. M’Lorinan captained the Christchurch Club last year and his success is pleasing to his many friends here.
