GREYMOUTH MARIST PLAY FOR SHIELD.

WILL FACE PREMIER TEAM OF CANTERBURY. The Christchurch Marist Rugby League team, who successfully withstood a challenge from Christian Brothers (Dunedin) for the Gore Cup last week, will defend their right to the Thacker Shield at Monica Park to-mor-row. The challengers are the Greymouth Marist team, who won the knock-out competition on the West Coast this season. The shield is for annual competition among winners of knock-out competitions in the South Island. The visitors arrived last night from the West Coast. A third grade team, who also made the trip, will play against a Sydenham thirteen at Monica Park to-morrow. P. Clarkson will be available for the local Marist team', and will take up his

usual position as half-back. Growcott, a junior grade man, played in Clarkson’s place last week and performed fairly well. The other backs will be the same as last week- M’lvendry will be full-back. Bond, Brittenden, and Pearce in the three-quarter line, and Gillespie and Spillane five-eighths. There will be a rearrangement of positions in the Marist pack, though the players will be the same. Carroll will go into the front row with Hanrahan (hooker) and Consedine, and Drayton will take Carroll’s place in the second row alongside Dobbs. Bums will be breakaway forward.

Several of the West Coast players are well known in Canterbury. C. E. Robins, five-eighth, and J. O’Malley, half-back, played for Christchurch Marist last season and for several pre-

ceding that. Robins is a clever player who puts plenty of sparkle into movements, and the. duel between him and Spillane should be interesting. J. O’Louglilin, who will be centre threequarters, played for the Christchurch Marist fourth grade team at one time. E. Quinn will be full-back for the visi* tors, and Kennedy and Brown will guard the wings. M. Kennedy is down for the first five-eighths position. The visiting forwards will include two good men in Mollov and R. Quinn. THACKER SHIELD. GREYMOUTH TEAM ARRIVES. The Greymouth Marist Rugby League team arrived in Christchurch last night.
