“ARCHBISHOP SPOKE ON GREAT OCCASION.”

REV J. J. NORTH ATTACKS UTTERANCE MADE AT CATHOLIC GATHERING (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, September 27. The Rev J. J. North writes to the Press as follows: “The Roman Catholic Church has enjoyed a good Press concerning the recent congress. If the recent interfer* ence with free speech in Sydney is seriously intended, the church does not intend to allow criticism. The Press has respected that sentiment so far that it has left the reading public without any illumination as to the why of the national nervousness in the matter of Mass. The Commons have twice over in the last few months vetoed the merest suggestion of an approach to it. in the national church. The King is required to take a hostile attitude toward it at his coronation. “The Press has not explained this national sentiment. The Sydney proceedings have been very charitably reported. That something else is due to be said appears from a report in the ‘Daily Telegraph Pictorial’ for September 3 of a speech of the head of the Roman Catholic Church in this country. The report reads:—‘l hope to see this young and resourceful nation grow into one of the most successful and most moral republics in the world.’ “This anticipation of the overthrow of the monarchy and the dissolution of the Empire may be the peculiar opinion of Archbishop Redwood, L>ut he spoke on a great public occasion and representatively. Unless he is misreported or otherwise repudiates the sentiment, it would seem that there is a political side to the Eucharistic Congress.”
