OBITUARY.

THOMAS KINCAID. The death occurred last night of Mr Thomas Kincaid, aged seventy-four, who established the well-known city grocery business which bears his name. The late Mr Kincaid was born in 1853 at Tullywhisker, County Tyrone, Ireland, where he received his early education. He was brought up on a farm, but preferred a commercial life, and elected to enter the grocery trade, to which he served an apprenticeship He sailed for New Zealand by the ship Jessie Readman, arriving at Lyttelton in 1880. After gaining colonial experience in different capacities, Mr Kincaid started business in partnership with Mr E. Marriot in 1883, trading as grocers, under the name of Kin* caid and Marriot. The partnership was dissolved in 1888, when Mr Kinsaid purchased the business known as Grinstead’s Importing Company. The name was altered to Kincaid's Grocery Importing Company. Mr Kincaid re. tired from the business a few years ago. He was elected unopposed to the City Council in 1895, on the occasion of a cas al vacancy, and was re-elected in 1597 by a very large majority. He was a member of the Anglican Church, and was a churchwarden at St John's for many years. He was also on the vestry of St Peter’s Church, Riccarton. He was married in Christchurch in 1885 to the third daughter of the late Mr W. Mehaffy, of County Tyrone, Ireland. Mrs Kincaid died fifteen years ago. Mr Kincaid's late residence in Riccarton road is one of the finest in Christchurch.
