LOCAL MATTERS ARE DISCUSSED BY MEMBERS OF UNITED BURGESSES.

Many matters of interest to the city were discussed at the meeting of the Council of the United Burgesses Association last evening in the City Council Chambers. Those present were: Mr R. K. Todhunter (chairman), Messrs A. J. Scott, J. Clemens, A. A. Cornelius, J. Stewart, H. W. Gourlay, J. Longton, W. Pool, D. W. Bartram, Sprosen and W. Burnett. Mr J. E. Longton referred to the request of the Tramway Board that trams should be given the right of way at intersections. He considered that the request should be granted. At present a tram containing perhaps forty people was held up to allow a motorcar to pass. He moved that the association give its support to the Tramway Boards request. After some discussion the motion was passed. DANGER TO PEDESTRIANS. A letter was received from the Richmond Burgesses’ Association drawing attention to the unsatisfactory control of traiiic, as far as pedestrians were concerned, at the Bank Corner. Mr Cornelius, the Richmond delegate, said that his association did not consider that there was sufficient supervsiion at the crossing. Pedestrians had to tako their chance to get across, and thus were exposed to a great risk. Ho considered that the whole of the traffic should be stopped at intervals to allow pedestrians to cross. Mr Gourlay said that if the pedestrian ran any risk it was his own fault. Mr Stewart said that the Richmond Association’s protest applied particularly to bicycles. Cyclists were the kings of the road at present. They took no notice of the traffic officers. The matter should be brought to the attention of the Council. Mr A. J. Scott said that he had been in London and had learned there to watch the traffic officers and not the motor-car. Mr Cornelius moved that pedestrians be given the prefeience at crossings over all traffic. Mr Gourlay said that the motion convicted with the motion already passed by the council witn regard to trams. It was decided to hoid the matter over, until members of the association had had an opportunity of seeing the traffic laws in reference to the matter. ROADING SCHEME FINANCE. Mr Scott moved and it was decided that the association should write to tne City Council suggesting that the Finance Committee of the City Council should instruct the City Treasurer to ootain a quotation from London for the dotation of the loading loan of £220,0uu. CONCESSION TICKETS. Mr Cornelius moved that the association should urge the abolition of ail restrictions governing the use of tramway concession lickeLs. Messrs Longton, Scott and Gourlay opposed the motion, stating that it would not be piacticabio and in any case was not fair to the regular tram passenger. The motiou was lost. A motion, moved by Mr Stewart, that the Council be asked to enforce the bylaw with regai-d to the removal of trees obstructing the view at street corners was passed. The application of the Beckenham Association for affiliation was gxanted.
