BAND OF HOPE COMPETITIONS END.

The recent competitions held under the auspices of the Canterbury Band of Hope Union were brought to a successful conclusion by the final demonstration concert of prize-winners, in the Choral Hall last evening. The programme submitted was very varied and attractive, as was shown by the, applause of a large and appreciative j audience. During the interval the president of the Union, on behalf of the executive, presented the shields and medals to the successful societies and competitors. Brother A. Martin, District Chief Ruler of the Independent Order of Rechabites, on behalf of the Order presented the gold championship medal to Miretta Shier, who gained the highest number of points in individual items. In each section that she had entered for she won a place. The following are the prize-winners:— “A" Silver Challenge Shield.—St Paul’s, 115 points; New Brighton United, runners-up, 95 points. “B” Silver Challenge Shield, for the society gaining at least 25 points in a squad item, which has not won a shield before. —Linwood X.0.R., 65 points. Gimnell Juvenile Silver Challenge Shield, awarded to the society gaining highest points in classes A and B (under thirteen years), presented by Mrs M. A. Gimmell. —New Brighton United. 48 points; Knox Presbyterian, runnersup. 46 points. Two medals for the Highland Fling and Sailors’ Hornpipe, presented by the Scottish Society, were both won by JeaiL Potts, of the Linwood United Society. The second prize medals were won by Maud Shaw (Hornpipe! and John Campbell (Highland Fling). The vocal scholarship, presented by the Christchurch Competitions Society, was won by Miss Freda Judkins, Philipson 1.0. R. Lodge.
