Mr and Mrs W. Hardie, Mansfield ! Avenue, who have been on a trap overseas. are expected to arrive in Christchurch to-day. Miss Ruth Dudley, Winchester Street, is the guest of Mrs H. Bowen,. Bank of New South Wales, Amberley, for a few days. Mrs W. M’Rae Peacock and Miss Lesley M’Rae Peacock, who have been in Auckland on an extended visit, will arrive in Christchurch on Saturday morning. The annual meeting of St Anne's Guild will be held at Church House on Friday evening, commencing at 7.30. An address concerning the work of the institution will be given by -Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M. Mr and Mrs T. F. Northcote (Waiau), Mr and Mrs Norman Rutherford (Mendip Hills), Mr and Mrs W. A. Scaifc (Pembroke). Mrs W. Scaife, sen. (Timaru), and Miss Wilson (Invercargill) j are guests at the United Service Hotel. The grand carnival fair, which is being held under the auspices of the North Canterbury L.R.C. in Smith and Smith Buildings, Tuam. Street, will be open again this evening. There are amusements for all, boxing, games, stalls, dancing, and continuous music is provided. An enjoyable social evening was held in the club-room of the Christchurch Garrison Non-Commissioned Officers, King Edward' Barracks, on Saturday. About sixty couples attended. The lucky spot waltz was won by Miss D. Streetly and Mr N. Milne, and the Monte Carlo by Miss N. Cater and Mr S. Forbes. Mrs N. Price presided at the piano. Cooper (Dunedin). -The Phillipstown Old Girls’ Association held a successful dance in tha Phillipstown Schoolroom on Saturday evening. The Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Dora Urry and Mr E. France. A dainty supper was supervised by the ladies’ committee, and Ayres's orchestra provided music for the dancers. Bofield, Mary Carr and Alice Quaid. Mrs C. Olin, Riccarton Road, was hostess at a happy evening held at her home recently to celebrate the coming of age of her eldest daughter, Ruby May. The place of honour was given to the birthday cake, decorated with twenty-one kewpies, and the guest of the evening was subsequently presented with the customary key by Mr T. Daly. The evening was spent in musical items, songs, games and dancing. Enjoyable items were given by Miss V. Mikldeson and Mr F. King. Music was provided by Olin’« Kiwi orchestra. Mr and Mrs J. Scott. Cave, arrived in Christchurch this morning and arc staying at Warner’s Hotel. Mr and Mrs E. V. Booth, of Wellington, are visitors to Christchurch, and are staying at the United Service Hotel.

The general manager of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association of Canterbury, Mr W. Machin, and Mrs Machin, have issued invitations, and will be the host and hostess at a dance to be given at the Winter Garden on Monday, October 1.

Within eighteen days, in mid and South Canterbury, Miss Esme Evans gained Silver Championship Cup and two Scholarships, Miss Joan Hughes, Gold Medal; Miss Mollie Fowler, Silver Medal; Miss Eunice Fowler, Silver Cup, and in Wellington Competitions, Miss Kathleen Read won highest, points for Girls’ Championship Classes, and Master Dawson Douglas attained the highest points in the Boys’ Championship.

A very pleasant evening was spent at the home of Mr and Mrs R. Monk, Marshland Road, the occasion being Mrs Monk’s sixtieth birthday. Cards and music made the time pass very quickly. The toast of the evening proposed by Mr Waugh was drunk with musical honours. Mr Waugh congratulated. Mrs Monk on her health and activity in spite of three score years. Mr and Mrs Monk who formerly lived in Kaikoura, have made many friends since coming to ’ Marshland. Those present were: Mr and Mrs G. Chisnall, Mr and Kirs D. Goode, Mr and Mrs Mintram, Mr and Mrs Hibbard. Mr and Kirs Sturgiss, Mr and Mrs Sibbald, Kir Horne, Mr and Mrs Les. Wilson, Mr and Mrs W. Waugh, Miss Rliona Wilson, Masters Jack Wilson, Mintram, and Allan Crozier. The singing of Auld Lang Syne brought a most successful party to a close.
