CYCLISTS TO RACE OVER HUNDRED MILES COURSE.
AMATEUR CLUB HAS ARRANGED BIG EVENT FOR SATURDAY NEXT. A 100 miles amateur road race, in which forty-two riders, including six from the North Island, will take part, will be run by the Papanui Amateur Sports Club on Saturday, September 29. The race will start from the intersection of Shirley and Marshland Roads, the limit men leaving at 9 a.m. and the scratch men, Grose and Lukey, at 10.2 a.m. The race is expected to finish at the Show Grounds at 3.30 p.m. From Christchurch, the route of the race will be through Loburn, Ashley Gorge, East and West Oxford, Waimakariri Gorge and Darfield. The race will be the first of its kind run over a 100 miles course, to be run in the South Island, and is also the first venture of the Papanui Amateur Sports Club, which was formed but two months ago. The longest amateur
cycling race run so far in the South Island is the Ashburton to Christchurch road race, over a course of fifty miles. Mr F. E. .Pearl, secretary of the club, reports that the riders have been training over the course for •the past month, and are well acquainted with the route. The handicaps will be published tomorrow. In addition to the cycling rape, a ten-mile modified Marathon race will be run from Sumner, and is expected to finish at the Show Grounds at 3.15 p.m. So far twenty-six entries have been received by the club, including one from Dunedin,' and many prominent harriers will take part. For the amusement of the crowd at the Show Grounds, the ttnder-seven-teen grade teams of the Technical College Old Boys and Merivale Clubs will play an exhibition match. The newlyformed Papanui Band will provide a musical programme.
