WASHINGTON LODGE, NO. 28. The quarterly meeting of the lodge was held on Monday, N.G. Brother F. Schwartz presiding. The hospital visitors reported that they had visited the Hospital and Sanitorium, and found that the members were progressing satisfactorily. Brother Kissel was granted a transfer to Palmerston North. Two candidates were proposed for membership. Correspondence was received from the North Canterbury District Lodge, calling a meeting to elect a secretary for the Board of Control. The first election of officers resulted as follows: Noble Grand, Brother M. Simson; Vice-Grand, Brothers Scott and Fleming: Financial Secretary, Brother W. H. Simmons; Recording Secretary, Brother E. Knights. The lodge was favoured with a visit from Brother Dobbs, of the Loyal Waimate Lodge. Past Grands Brothers Martin, Barnsley, Rintoul, Garters, Lane and Brother Fleming were elected a committee to make arrangements for the Christmas festival. Brother Barnsley, captain of the lodge card team, presented to the lodge the Card Cup won for the third year in succession, and the prize-money won was donated towards the children’e Christmas tree. The members of the card team were each presented by the lodge with a fountain pen. A committee consisting of P.G. Brothers M’Cullough, Lane Simmons',. Cooper , and Rintoul. were appointed to finalise the arrangements in reference to the jubilee of the lodge in October. A hearty vote of thanks accorded to the visitors was responded to by Brother C. H. Browne, D.D.G.M. G.P. Brother Greensla.de, of the Ridgely Lodge, and Brother Dobbs, of the Waimate Lodge. The sum of £4l was passed for sick pay. BIRTHDAY EVENINGS. Last Wednesday an enjoyable evening was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. Clemens, Stourbridge Street, Spreydon, the occasion being the fifteenth birthday of their eldest daughter. Elwyn Dorothy. Dancing, games and competitions were indulged in by the young folk present. Among those present were: Mr and Mrs M’Guinness, Mr and Mrs A. Wood, Mrs C. Miles, Misses Mary and Nora M'Guinness, Valma Wood, Nellie Glover, Hilrae Reynolds, Mavis, Pegg}’ and Elwyn Clemens, Alice Rhodes, Lucy Rattray, Gwen Stuart and Messrs W. Boulton, R. Hyndman, C. Shaw, R. Miles, R. Scorgie, B. Turner, R. Campbell, L. Mooar and J. Jack. A birthday party was held on Saturday last at 31, Stourbridge Street, to celebrate the tenth birthday of Master Willie Gaskill, many of his schoolboj’’ friends being present. After tea items were given by Keith Campbell, violin solo; Keith Craig, piano solo; Russell Bell, violin solo; Keith Campbell and Willie Gaskill, acrobatic performance. At the close of the evening a vote of thanks was given to Mrs Gaskill for the splendid entertainment provided. PERSONAL. News has been received of the death at his home in Gosport, of Captain James M’Cracken. The deceased lived in Christchurch for a number of years, residing at Moule Street, Addington. He was the only brother of the late Mr D. M’Cracken, of Lincoln Road, Addington. His end was not unexpected, as he had been in ill-health for some time.

The untimely death of Mr J. E. R. Smith, which took place last Saturday, at his residence, Cashmere Hills, cast quite a gloom over the whole district. Although Mr Smith had only been head master of the Somerfield School for six weeks, still during that short period he had endeared himself to the children of the school.

ADDINGTON BURGESSES’ ASSOCIATION.

The monthly meeting of the association was held last Monday. Mr P. J. Molloy presided. A motion of condolence with Mr E. Pritchard, in his bereavement was passed. An address on “Fish Culture” was given by Mr D. Hope, Curator of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, and was much appreciated. Mr R. Aitcheson was elected a new member. It was decided to hold a public meeting at an early date, to hear the Special Committee of the City Council with respect to the proposed loan of £220.000 for the reconstruction of roads. The Social Committee met after the meeting, and final arrangements were made for the social and dance to be held on August 30. A card match was arranged with the Aranui Burgesses’ Association on September 5. BOY SCOUTS. A meeting of parents and those interested in the Boy Scout Troop which was recently formed in connection with St Martins Church, was held in the schoolroom. The Rev Rankin presided. District Scoutmaster Hodgen addressed the meeting on the Scout movement. A committee was formed, and ways and means were discussed to raise funds for the troop. It was decidI ed to hold a concert in the second week |in October, the items to be given by I the Scouts from other troops, and to ■apply for the registration of navy-blqe with khaki edge as the colours, these being the colours of the old troop which disbanded some, time ago. Mr D. Sloan ! was unanimously elected Scoutmaster, 1 and Mr Gorden Street Assistant Scoutmaster. Fourteen boys applied for enrolment, and the troop is open to all boys over the age of ten. ADDINGTON LEAGUE SOCIAL CLUB. There was another large attendance at the weekly dance held in the Selwyn

Street Hall by the Addington League Social Club last Tuesday, when a number of novelty dances were held, also a Monte Carlo one-step, the winners being Miss Sedgley and Mr R. Gray. Next week's dance is advertised in this issue, and will also be advertised in Tuesday’s “ Lyttelton Times.”

LOY’AL ADDINGTON LODGE M.U., 1.0.0. F., NO. 6544.

On Monday evening the quarterly meeting of the lodge was held. A very large attendance of members was presided over by N.G. Brother F. \V. Larcombe. The sick visitors reported on the condition of the sick brethren of the lodge. A- very hearty welcome was extended to Brother A. J. Forsyth, E.S-, on his return to lodge meetings after his recent serious accident. A letter was received from the Grand Secretary, Brother A. G. Shrimpton, stating that the sum of £7B had been placed to the credit of the lodge from the surplus of the Central Funeral Fund. The new scale of contributions to the fund was also given. An invitation was extended to the N.G. by the Loi’al City of Norwich Lodge to attend the celebrations- of their sev-enty-seventh anniversary. Nine new members presented themselves for initiation, Brothers F. Harris, P.G., and J. E. Trainer acting as conductors. The secretary announced that the roll of the lodge now stood at 195, and he exhorted members to make an effort to ensure that the 200, mark was well passed by the end of the next quarter. The principal business of the evening was the election of the committee to carry out the preliminary arrangements for the celebration in October next of the anniversary of the lodge. It was decided that the officers of the lodge form the committee. together with Brothers Wigglesworth, Forsyth, Trainer and Flintoff, power being given to add to the number. Four of the new initiates volunteered to work on the committee that had been elected. The secretary. Brother A. L. Gourlav, on behalf of the Hall Committee, reported that the committee set up at the last meeting to investigate the best means of improving the lodge property bad discussed several suggestions that had been made. Brother E. B. Harris had volunteered to consider the suggestions from a practical standpoint, and to present a report to the lodge at a later date. MOTHERS’ UNION. The fourth annual meeting of the St Mary's branch of the Mothers’ Union took place last week. There was a good attendance of members, and Mrs W. S. Bean presided. The annual election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs W. S. Bean; vice-presb dent, Mrs Downing; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mrs F. Hawkins; honorary assistant secretary. Miss Bowen; committee, Mesdames Griffiths, Coote, O’Callahan, Wilson, Sutton and J. Cook. CHILDREN’S CONCERT. A very enjoyable children's concert was given by * the Sydenham Baptist Young People, under the leadership of Miss Gainsford. in the Baptist Church Hall, on. Tuesday, August 21. Most of the items were in character dress and the limelight effect on the different groups was very pleasing. Well-known nursery rhymes were depicted, including “‘Little Boy Blue,” “Little BoPeep,” “Little Jack Horner” and “Humpty Dumpty.” The “Motor-car Chorus,” which represented “The Mayor’s Car,” was well arranged and afforded much merriment. Miss Marion Rigby presided at the piano and Miss Bell assisted in arranging the scenes. A lantern lecture entitled “Health, Pleasure and Profit’ was given by Mr E. R- Clark in the Choral Hall on Thursday e\-ening.
